The Pebbles

Many years ago in a small village, a farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a village moneylender.

The moneylender, who was an awful, mean man, fancied the farmer's beautiful daughter. Since the farmer was unable to pay the debt, the moneylender proposed a deal.

He said he would forgot the farmer's debt if he could marry his daughter. Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the cunning money-lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter. He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag.

Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag.

1. If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father's debt would be forgiven.

2. If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven.

3. But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail.

They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the farmer's field. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then told the girl to pick a pebble from the bag.

Now, imagine that you were standing in the field.

What would you have done if you were the girl?

If you had to advise her, what would you have told her?

Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:

1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.

2. The girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the bag and expose the money-lender as a cheat.

3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save her father from his debt and imprisonment.

Take a moment to ponder over the story. The above story is used with the hope that it will help us appreciate the difference between lateral and logical thinking. The girl's dilemma cannot be solved with traditional logical thinking. Think of the consequences if she chooses the above logical answers.

What would you recommend to the Girl to do?

Well, here is what she did . . . .

The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles.

"Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked."

Since the remaining pebble is black, it is reasonable to assumed that she had picked the white one. And since the money-lender dared not admit his dishonesty, the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely favorable one for herself and her father.

10 tips to speak correct english

i. Observe the mouth movements of those who speak English well and try to imitate them.

When you are watching television, observe the mouth movements of the speakers. Repeat what they are saying, while
imitating the intonation and rhythm of their speech.

ii. Until you learn the correct intonation and rhythm of English, slow your speech down.

If you speak too quickly, and with the wrong intonation and rhythm, native speakers will have a hard time
understanding you.
Don't worry about your listener getting impatient with your slow speech -- it is more important that everything you say
be understood.

iii. Listen to the 'music' of English.

Do not use the 'music' of your native language when you speak English. Each language has its own way of 'singing'.

About 6-7 years ago, I was in a philosophy class at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (good science/engineering school) and the teaching assistant was explaining Descartes.

He was trying to show how things don't always happen the way we think they will and explained that, while a pen always falls when you drop it on Earth, it would just float away if you let go of it on the Moon. My jaw dropped a little. I blurted "What?!" Looking around the room, I saw that only my friend Mark and one other student looked confused by the TA's statement. The other 17 people just looked at me like "What's your problem?" "But a pen would fall if you dropped it on the Moon, just more slowly." I protested.

"No it wouldn't." the TA explained calmly, "because you're too far away from the Earth's gravity." Think. Think. Aha! "You saw the APOLLO astronauts walking around on the Moon, didn't you?"

I countered, "why didn't they float away?"

"Because they were wearing heavy boots." he responded, as if this made perfect sense (remember, this is a Philosophy TA who's had plenty of logic classes). By then I realized that we were each living in totally different worlds, and did not speak each others language, so I gave up.

As we left the room, my friend Mark was raging. "My God! How can all those people be so stupid?" I tried to be understanding. "Mark, they knew this stuff at one time, but it's not part of their basic view of the world, so they've forgotten it. Most people could probably make the same mistake."

To prove my point, we went back to our dorm room and began randomly selecting names from the campus phone book. We called about 30 people and asked each this question: 1

1. If you're standing on the Moon holding a pen, and you let go, will it
a) float away,
b) float where it is,
or c) fall to the ground?

About 47 percent got this question correct. Of the ones who got it wrong, we asked the obvious follow-up question:

2. You've seen films of the APOLLO astronauts walking around on the Moon, why didn't they fall off?

About 20 percent of the people changed their answer to the first question when they heard this one! But the most amazing part was that about half of them confidently answered, "Because they were wearing heavy boots."

I decided to settle this question once and for all. Therefore, I put two multiple choice questions on my Physics 111 test, after the study of elementary mechanics and gravity.

(c) move sideways
(d) fall to the ground
(e) none of the above

25. When the Apollo astronauts wre on the Moon, they did not fall off because:
(a) the Earth's gravity extends to the Moon
(b) the Moon has gravity
(c) they wore heavy boots
(d) they had safety ropes
(e) they had spiked shoes

The response showed some interesting patterns! The first question was generally of average difficulty, compared with the rest of the test: 57% got it right. The second question was easier: 73% got it right. So, we need more research to explain the people who got #25 right but did not get #13 right!

The second interesting point is that these questions proved to be excellent discriminators: that is, success on these two questions proved to be an extremely good predictor of overall success on the test. On the first question, 92% of those in the upper quarter of the test score got it right; only 20% of those in the bottom quarter did. They generally chose answers (a) or (b). On the second question, 97% in the upper quarter got it right and 33% in the lower quarter did. The big popular choice of this group was (c)...33% chose heavy boots, followed closely by safety ropes at 27%.

A telling comment on the issue of fairness in teaching elementary physics: Two students asked if I was going to continue asking them about things they had never studied in the class.

Hacking

The idea of hacking may conjure up stylized images of electronic vandalism, espionage, dyed hair, and body piercings. Most people associate hacking with breaking the law. From this point of view, all hackers are considered to be criminals. But people always misjudge other people, like the most famous misjudging, Muslims are terrorists, but we all know that terrorism has no religion.

Back to hacking, it's true that there are people who use hacking techniques to break the law, but hacking isn't really about that. In fact, hacking is more about following the law than breaking it. The essence of hacking is to find some unintended or overlooked uses for the law and then applying them in new and inventive ways to solve a problem. The problem could be the lack of access to some computer system or figuring out a way to make old phone equipment control a railroad system(we are talking here about the first use of hacking techniques).

Usually, the hacked solutions solve these problems in a unique way, unimaginable by those confined to conventional methodology.

Thoughts still wandering

The scream was coming closer and closer to her, what could she do? There's nothing she was able to do, she was scared, frightened, she was so affraid that she could die of fear.

her eyes got used to darkness, she saw a man running, and an arrow coming from nowhere was pointed to his heart, she couldn't look at the next scene, she had fainted.

As she opened her eyes, the place became as calm as it was, she heard someone breathing, it was a very low sound. The man she saw earlier was dying.She tried to help him, she tried to ask him about this place, but he only said: "This.....is....just.....the.... beginni...ng" and then, he was dead.

At this moment, she saw something she never saw something like it before. She saw a white substance getting out of the man body. It seemed to her like it was his soul, she saw his soul getting out of his body and flying away, it was like a little light, but it has quickly faded away.

She was concentrated on that little light that she couldn't take the time to look around her when the light was makin the place a lil bit clear.

She followed the direction the light has took, but it seems only bad surprises awaited herin this cursed place. She heard some footsteps behind her.What a surprise!!!! The body of the dead man was like awaken, and now,,,she's confronted to a dead body....

Opening her eyes, Julia can see only darkness.

She can't figure it out; is it the darkness of a pitch black night? or is it the darkness of a day, without light? like the ones when the sun is hidden behind thick grey clouds....Scanning the whole place with her eyes...

What is this place? how did she end up here? She can't even find out, her head is full with questions but there's no way she could find the answer,,,,

Is it a dark room? or is it a wide place like a forest? it could even be some mountain or the side of some lake but in this darkness, it's impossible to know,

Trying to find any little hint to help her find the truth, but the truth is hard to find, it is hidden somewhere, somewhere very far away, somewhere no one has ever reached, it could be in any place, maybe a cave under a mountain, or in the depths of the sea...

Does that mean she's in a cave? How did she reach this place?

She keeps on walking. It's the only thing she can do for the moment. She's hearing some strange sounds, like dead bodies crying,. However, this sound is coming from far away. As she's going further, this sound is disappearing,,,,now it has completely disappeared. Silence is filling out the place, very heavy silence. she can only hear the sound of her steps on this unknown ground, Despite it's impossible to see anything in this darkness, she's feeling like it's getting more dark as she's going forward,,,but it's the only choice she has, she has no other alternative. In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate *1 *1 One of the many practices taught by Islam is that its followers should begin their activities in the name of God. This principle, if consciously and earnestly followed, will necessarily yield three beneficial results. First, one will be able to restrain oneself from many misdeed, since the habit of pronouncing the name of God is bound to make one wonder when about to commit some offence how such an act can be reconciled with the saying of God's holy name. Second, if a man pronounces the name of God before starting good and legitimate tasks, this act will ensue that both his starting point and his mental orientation are sound. Third - and this is the most important benefit - when a man begins something by pronouncing God's name, he will enjoy God's support and succors ; God will bless his efforts and protect him from the machinations and temptation of Satan. For whenever man turns to God, God turns to him as well.

Well, u don't probably know this, but in the Holy Quran the process of the embryonic development was describede in a very accurate and precise way, that was back in the 7th century. Scientists discovered that only recently with microscopes and advanced equipment...
Who else than God could know such things?
