English is undoubtly the most important of the world's laungages at the present time,in number of speakers it ranks second,with apporixmately 275million native speakers,compared with 610million natives speakers of mandarin chinese,spanish comes next,with 210million,followed by russian with 140 million and hindi-urdu and arabic with 130 million each.Importance is not measured only by the numbers,however.The uses to which launguage is put and the extent of it's international exposure,are at least as important of the sheer bulk of native speakers.

The world wide use of english in deplomacy,commerce,and science is evidence of it's importance in this regard,and serves to explain why many millions of people around the world find it desrrable and some times necessary to learn it as a second launguage.

It's not the intrinsie superiority of english over other launguages that's made it the premier world launguage.if it's richer in vocabulary,more flexible in grammer,and more expressive then other launguages(and some would question at least the last two of these claims),these qualities are the results,not the couses of it's importance in the world.simply states,what makes a launguage  important is the importance of the peaople who use it and the uses ti which they put it in.

sincethe eighteenth cuntury ,speakers pf english -at the first.from the british isles and later from america and the dominions have played a dominiont role in colonial expansion,industrial and technological development,and world politics.The position of english  in the world is the direct result of the history of those who speak it.

The adaptability of launguage is related to it's versalility.like other human institutions,a launguage is adjusted by long  use to the particular needs of the people and society that use it.when these needs change,the launguage also changes,usually much more rapidly than most other institutions.This is why it is that in 1500years-English has changed from the launguage of a rough,warlike,rather savage,ararian trible society like that,of the Anglo-Sexons too the typical launguage of the most complicated technological civilization yet developed on earth.

It has always been easily adjusted to meet the new needs put open it by a new religion a new social system,an age of world wide exploration,conquest,and colonization and a series of political agricultural,inclustrial scientific,technological,and electronic revolotions.Other launguages have done the same,and the process is going on today as the peoples of many different culture around the world cope with the problem of adopting to westurn society.
