Though I am not a Buddhist, I will try to give a brief introduction. As you may be aware, the majority in Sri Lanka are Buddhists. But we have other communities living here, like  Hindus, Christians and Muslims (Sunnis).

Buddhists base their beliefs on the "dhamma" (teachings) of the Gautama Sidhartha who lived in North India and South Nepal. Some Buddhists say that what they believe is not a religion based on a God or Gods, but that Buddhism is a way of life based on meritorious acts and on compassion for all living beings (including animals). Sidhartha became the Buddha when he attained a state of "nirvanah" while fasting and meditating under the Bo (Peepul) tree at Gaya (North India).

Several hundreds of years after the Buddha died, Buddhism had split into two main sects – Theravada (Hinayana) and Mahayana. This may be thought of as something like Sufism among Muslims. Mahayana Buddhists are mainly found in China, Korea and Japan. Theravada Buddhism is the majority religion in Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Thailand and Cambodia.

I think Buddhism is a good subject for discussion. As far as I know Buddhism is not a religion , it's a kind of philosophy about the way of life and it's very different from Islam . Judaism or Christianity , for me it's much better than them cuz there's no war for promoting Buddhism in the world and they're very modest and wise. In fact, they're looking for peace not only mentally but also physically. They're not luxurious at all and even against with them. They do love nature, that's why their country is evergreen
