a blow can be either a physical hit, if someone hit you with a baseball bat, that would be called a blow.

 

It can also be an emotional shock.  If someone was told they had cancer and were going to die, that would be an emotional blow.

 

In both of these cases, a person needs time to recover from this sudden shock, whether it is physical or emotional.  But in this story, they are saying that he was concentrating so hard on stealing the diamonds, he didn't really even notice it.
