I think the most important thing in learning (whatever you want to learn)is listening. Just imagine ,how do a toddler learn to speak? by listening..

By listening and speaking you can learn English easily , but you have to sit tight it by reading and writing. That because sometimes you can break the grammar rules while you talking. Like what I am doing now, I don't think that I am follow the right rules.

All of skills are important, however I agree with thegoodgirl that the most important skill that we have to have firstly is listening. We can allocate our time to be 40% to listen, 30% to speak, 20% to read and 10% to write. By listening and reading there will be many informations that can be gained, however by speaking and writing we could communicate our idea to others.

Listen to people speaking your own language – spoken language is rarely complete, grammatical sentences.  You would sound ridiculous if you tried to speak like a book!  So I agree – the natural way to learn is to listen and speak, then consolidate what you have learned by reading and writing.

By the way, it's interesting that diuscussions such as this one on forums are usually typed in spoken rather than written forms so yes, Lonely, your post is ungrammatical but it feels like relaxed speech so it isn't 'wrong'.  Internet English is spoken English – written!

My response is more to Kay G rather than to any other postings.KayG is a teacher of English,I am sure. The suggestions are the more appropriate and real help for all new to English.English, like any other language,is first learnt through listening.Listening is the first step to learnig,as a child learns from mother's tongue. But merely listening will not help. You have to reproduce what you listen and then it is speech. To learn a language the most important is speaking.A speaker, automatically will listen.Reading and writing and further extensions to speaking. So,I strongly feel that Speaking is the key stone among the four skills in English language learning.English Baby sparingly comes up with such solid discussions.

Any friend who wants to keep on similar communication is welcome .You are at your liberty to e-mail me.Pl.show subject as ' or 'English-baby'or else I may delete
