Lesson
EARWORM - noun
We all know that feeling of hearing a tune on the radio and then being bothered by it for the rest of the day. Now we've finally got a name for 'this song which keeps going round and round in my head'. This is the earworm, invading our consciousness for several hours until it finally gets removed, often by another earworm.
Example
"The company shifted its focus from background music to foreground; the music suddenly wanted to be noticed, to implant 'earworms' - musical phrases you can't get out of your head - into the disc changer of your brain."(Washington Post, 19th June 2005)
