Lesson

Hi guys,

Today I want to teach a really helpful phrase,

"sweeping something under the rug"

First of all, a rug is like a small carpet in case you didn't know.  It's something you put on the floor like a mat.

If you literally sweep something under the rug it means that when you are cleaning the floor, you actually don't clean properly.  You put the floor dirt  under the rug so no one can see it.  The obvious truth is that the dirt is still there and it's a bad idea.

We often use this phrase in spoken English when someone is lying and trying to hide the evidence about something they did.  They are hoping no one will find out the truth.

An example sentence you could say to a friend is:

"You should really tell your boss the truth about you losing the business deal.  He will find out sooner or later if you keep making excuses and sweeping everything under the rug.  If you tell him now at least he won't fire you.  Things will be much worse if you get caught lying".

I hope that made sense to you.  Check out my first course for Online Spoken English

I'd love to hear your comments and I'll be sure to answer any questions.
