Lesson
Becoming fluent in speaking and writing English.
If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice: There are four skills in learning English which are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must bear in mind is that reading and listening are inputs whereas speaking and writing are outputs. In other words, if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening. There are some ways that you can do so, which I will try to summarize.
1) Reading
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the structure, unfamiliar words etc as you read. There is no need that you stick to some complicated grammar structures or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them for example in other passages or books is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or structures in it. To begin reading, I recommend the Penguin Readers books. They are classified by level of difficulty.
2) Listening.
As for listening, there are two options:
a)Aside from reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes.
b)You can only concentrate on your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening....
I myself prefer the latter because when you are skillful and native-like at reading, your listening skill grows automatically. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening. For listening I recommend cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy and do not contain complicated phrases or slang terms. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to Englishbaby lessons, VOA or BBC programs broadcasted every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes. If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect

Reading or watching movies to learn Englsh I often hear people say that they like watching movies and TV programs to learn English. I have always maintained that repetitive reading and listening is more useful for language improvement. The reason is simple. In watching movies you have lots of clues as to what is going on. The dialogue is not so concentrated unless you are watching a very intellectual movie. When reading, or listening to an audio book, you are completely dependent on the language. The intensity of the learning experience is much greater. It is easier to repeat your reading and listening and it is easier to do, whenever and wherever you want. Think of people speaking their own language. Who will express themselves better, whether in writing or speaking, people who watch a lot of TV and movies, or people who read a lot? I rest my case. GOOD LUCK

Thank you very much for the very useful lesson. I really face difficulties in speaking and listening though I knew the words while I’m listening.

The more you practice the better. This means whatever you do to get immersed into the language is good to improve your English. You need to learn how to think in English in order to gain fluency. Keep in touch either with native speakers or somebody who command it as much as you can. It is worth it. Like they say: " Practice makes perfect" Good luck!! Orlando Serna

A letter to the learners of English: 5 Reading, the best way to learn English —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- Prof. M.N.K.Bose Professor of English, Faculty of Education, Taiz yemen Dear learner friends, In my last letter I said reading is the best way forlearners to learn English. Listening to and speaking involve at least two people and you may not get a willing partner to converse with, but reading is a personal activity and you don’t need another one. Speaking in English in public places may annoy some people. One of my students narrated this incident: when he and his friend were discussing something in English while travelling in a bus, one of the co-travellers was so much annoyed that he put his hand on the jambiah; my student got the message and discontinued his talk. But no one can stop you from reading as much as you like and as and when you like; you don’t annoy anyone while reading silently, do you? Start with simple, well written stories in English or comics with a lot of pictures and slowly move on to difficult ones. Every time you read something new, recollect it after you have finished reading it. Better, tell the story to one of your good friends; you can tell the story in Arabic once a while. You can form a readers’ circle with like minded people and share your stories among yourselves. Have you heard of the Outlook Listeners’ Club of the BBC? Most of the Radio Stations encourage such clubs; Yemen Radio must also have such clubs. Form Listeners’ Club, listen to the English news bulletin everyday and discuss the items in your club. I also suggest that you write down the new words you come across and their meaning in a pocket note book to prepare your personal dictionary; more importantly, use those words in your writings often till the words become a part of your own vocabulary; this will enrich your word power. Go on reading. Don’t despair if you don’t understand what you are reading; in the first instance you may not understand what you read, but if you read it for the second time some of what you read will be understood and the third time more. When you read something next time you will be getting more of what you read. Reading like any other skill is learnt only through practice. Who has learnt to drive a car at one attempt? So, don’t despair if you don’t understand what you read for the first time; go back to the same material after sometime, you will get more from it. Good luck. Happy reading! Yours affectionately, Dr .M.N.K.Bose.
