Imagine that you need a new wallet. What will you buy? Will you get a fabric one? A wallet made out of plastic or some other synthetic material? Or will you get a tough, long-lasting leather wallet?
Many people prefer leather over other fabrics. It is strong and lasts a long time. It can be used to make many different things. It feels smooth and soft and has a wonderful scent. Leather is also very fashionable. People love to wear designer leather jackets and shoes. However, some people think that leather is not humane. Their conscience will not let them wear the skin of animals. They prefer to use synthetic fabrics for their clothes.
Sara and Julie are talking about Sara’s new leather purse. Find out what they think in this English lesson.

Sara_R: I just bought the most amazing, gigantic leather purse. I love it.
Julie: Awesome!
Sara_R: Yeah! Do you have a leather purse of your own?
Julie: I don’t. My purse is made out of some synthetic material.
Sara_R: I buy leather whenever I can. It’s so long-lasting and durable and strong and… I love the aroma!
Julie: Huh. What about the argument that leather is made from animals and a lot of people are against using animal skin for products?
Sara_R: Well, that’s a good thing to believe in. You have a conscience. Good for you.
Julie: I’m not saying that’s necessarily how I feel. I just know that a lot of people are sort of anti-leather for that reason.
Sara_R: That’s true.
Julie: Personally, I’m kind of ambivalent. I mean, I have some leather shoes.
Sara_R: That is something to think about.

Discussion
Sara just got a new leather purse. She loves everything about leather: the way it feels, how long it lasts, and the way it smells. Sara buys leather whenever she has the opportunity. She wants to know if Julie also likes leather.
Julie does not own a leather purse, but she does have some leather shoes. She feels conflicted about owning leather. She is not sure if it is a good thing to do or not. She reminds Sara that some people do not believe in owning leather because it is made from animal skins. Sara says it is good that Julie has a conscience and that leather is an important thing to think about.
Do you like leather? Do you have any leather clothes?
