The hardest languages

I added the topic about the most beautiful languages. Now i would like to know your opinion about the hardest ones. Which languages do you find impossible to learn for you ? I think Chinese and Japanese are hard because of their characters. In Chinese there are also tones which are almost impossible to master. There are a lot of similar words and every word can have a lot of meanings. I also find my mother tongue – Polish – hard to learn. It has complicated grammar and some sounds that are difficult to repeat by foreigners.

I agree with the languages mentioned above.

Japanese has three written languages/styles, one of which is not too difficult and one of which is similar to Chinese and therefore really hard. Spoken Japanese, in my opinion, is much harder than spoken Chinese, because Japanese is a much 'softer' sounding language. Chinese tones are tough, but you can usually 'cheat' by talking quickly - most listeners focus on the words more than the tones.

Modern Korean has a simple writing system, but speaking it is much harder.

Slavic languages are tough too. As Jacob said, the grammar is almost impossible!

Hungarian is especially tough (for me!) because it is unrelated to other languages except Finnish and a few of others. At least in Polish, many of the words are similar to English ones.

I'm sure that it often depends on which language is your mother tongue – e.g. Japanese people generally find Chinese writing easy, unlike Europeans.

I agree with Markchina's opinion. It depends on what your native language is. For example it's easier for me to learn Slavic languages because their grammars have many common things and many words sound alike. Sometimes I even can understand what said and written in Polish or Slovak not even learning those languages. The same situation with Scandinavian languages, for example. If I already know Swedish, studing Danish and Norwegian will be much easier.
As for English, I don't find it difficult. Its grammar is simple enough, relatively. Though noone is insured against mistakes… The only difficulty in it, for me personally, is that there are a lot of meanings of the same words in different situations. And the writing and reading rules… Often it's better just to remember how that or this word is written and not even try to understand why this or that word is written in one way and read and pronounced in absolutely another one.

Those are very good points about some English words having multiple meanings and pronunciation, dissipator.

I have not explorered another foreign language other than English yet. English is difficult enough for me. I just want to master English before trying out others.

Japanese is fun…well as long as it's hiragana and not katakana.

Chinese…is HARD…lol. I can't even call myself chinese for not being able to talk or write in Chinese.

Hindi and Sanskrit are hard..my mom learned that language since she's going to travel there this year and I almost lost my mind when I'm practiced with her..

and French..I think it's easier for me to listen to someone talking in Spanish than in French..I have to be very very focussed on what they say and I speak really slow in French Laughing
