My dear Chinese friends!

First of all I want to offer my sympathy in connection with that horrible disaster which happend recently.
I wish and hope many people will be saved still.

I have a question about your culture.
I'm post-graduating now. My subject is Computer Science but still we study Philosophy .
Well, the first part is about history of philosophy and it begins with ancient cultures (Indian, Chinese and Greek). I became very interested in it.
I want to ask you
 - What is your attitude to the ancient philosophy now?
 - Is Confucianism still the part of your culture?
 - How does it influence your life?

Thank you in advance – I'm waiting for your opinion

thanks for your concerning on the disaster in Sichuan, China…

about your question i think it is too profound to explain detailedly…

so brifely, the conucianism had been the very ancient code of conduct for nearly thousand years…especially in the ancient times, people was needed to obey the basic core dogmas, for instance, the polite, justice, loyalty, sense of honor….you can see many of countries like korean, japan, has been always influenced by confucianism….

nowadays, china tends to be more and more diversified…but still the confucianism is the main culture, ethic that chinese people should follow…for example, you may notice that chinese people always pay much attention to his or her family, respect the old, and take care of the young… be loyal to his or her higher-up…..it is also another embodiment of confucianism…almostly every single aspect of chinese is being influenced by the confucianism….

you may find something useful….!!!

yeah!! actually it is why china got alot of achievements today…but you know there cant be success for any one or any nation..coz everything is imperfect!!!!

you may find some priciples of confucianism are very humanized even in the thousands year ago…and many principles of confucianism was well combined with the Buddhism, you will find some principles of Buddhism are very close to the confuciansim..yeah that was the wisdom of ancient chinese philosopher…

i am engaged in signal processing. i only want say sth of my obsevations.

(1) you know that china has a long glorious history. Kung Tze establish confusianism about 500 BC. in that period, many types of theories appear, confusianism is only one form of them. Dynasty Qin defeat other six countries and made Chinese first uinion, which could be attribute to theory of legacy proposed by another philosopher.

as confusianism contends to respect governers, olders. it is consistent with the anticipation of rulers. feudal governers started to use it to control all the people and many ancient figures developped such a theory to such a extent that in nearly all aspects of our society including official affairs, private living, customs, all tips and all relations among people. and even emperor himeself should learn all the books and obey all the rules. deviation of all people including emperor will be condemned. you can see that confusianism organized our ancient society. all our activities have such a rule to follow and for quite a long time it boosted the advance of our nation. it is really very fabulous that when you do anything you have such a referrence.

However, anything should not go to extreme. confusianism not out of exception. the basic priciple of confusianism is one group of people should comply with another group. son's definite compliance to his father, inferior's compliance to his master, wife's compliance to his husband. yes, it is really a detailed norm of our society. but it is not ideal,  lack of basic equality of human beings. it is suitable to dictators. if master wish his inferior to die, and he must die. it is horrible.

(2) certainly. we can not eliminate it abruptly and in fact we don't want to. as modern time comes near, china became a half-colony. acompany with it, the traditional structure of philosophy was ruined. and many foreign philosophies and religions came in, in which Marxism was the most revolutionary and profound. however, there is a connectivity of our customs and habits. maybe official affairs and fasion have changed a lot, but ways of our thinking and ceremony of important events have no great change. all thing has two parts, our nation has try our best to keep the positive component of confusianism. and even some primary schools have established courses to cultivate young generations not to forget our tradition.

(3) as to myself. you know fonfusianism put family to a very key point. i am of 25 years old. i have ever considered to go aboard for further education. yet my parents didn't permit and then i gave up. i was the only child of my parents, and i tried my best to find a job near my family. many children like me may obey our parents even their wills are nonsense. you know china has just suffered an earthquake, you also may have already learnt that our whole nation have exert our best to help people suffering such a disaster by donation, blessing and sth like that. this is another manifest of confusianism's idea of interest of nation comes first. and many sequences of detailed activities of our marriage, berial, birth and celebration may give you much more clues.

Thank you, slipaway. Very informative and useful for me, thank you thousands times.
It's very frustrating that you couldn't go abroad to study… You know, even in my country I sometimes meet people from China, studying at our universities (next year I'm going to read lectures for chinese students about OOP, by the way  Laughing) And as far as I'm concerned - they are extremely studious and diligent. I think, that's your national feature tooSmile
But maybe your parents just love you too much to let you go? I had very similar problem in my past – but I just was going to study in another city… In the end my parents agreed to let me go – and I never came back…I think they miss me now, very much. So, who knows…

thank you. your specialty setting seems good. you know, philosiphy and computer science are quite different. maybe such a way may broaden your horizon, and cultivate your special thinking. anyway, i like that. OOP is very popular nowadays, maybe, you can draw some philosiphic idea from it. it has perfectly delt with the relation of data and codes. programming design development may tell you what people are possessing and what we are persuiting.
