All Terrorists are Muslims…Except the 94% that Aren’t

CNN recently published an article  entitled Study: Threat of Muslim-American terrorism in U.S. exaggerated; according to a study released by Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, “the terrorist threat posed by radicalized Muslim-Americans has been exaggerated.”

Yet, Americans continue to live in mortal fear of radical Islam, a fear propagated and inflamed by right wing Islamophobes.  If one follows the cable news networks, it seems as if all terrorists are Muslims.  It has even become axiomatic in some circles to chant: “Not all Muslims are terrorists, but nearly all terrorists are Muslims.” Muslims and their “leftist dhimmi allies” respond feebly, mentioning Waco as the one counter example, unwittingly affirming the belief that “nearly all terrorists are Muslims.”

But perception is not reality.  The data simply does not support such a hasty conclusion.  On the FBI’s official website, there exists a chronological list of all terrorist attacks committed on U.S. soil from the year 1980 all the way to 2005.  That list can be accessed here (scroll down all the way to the bottom).

Terrorist Attacks on U.S. Soil by Group, From 1980 to 2005, According to FBI Database

Terrorist Attacks on U.S. Soil by Group, From 1980 to 2005, According to FBI Database

According to this data, there were more Jewish acts of terrorism within the United States than Islamic (7% vs 6%).  These radical Jews committed acts of terrorism in the name of their religion.  These were not terrorists who happened to be Jews; rather, they were extremist Jews who committed acts of terrorism based on their religious passions, just like Al-Qaeda and company.

Yet notice the disparity in media coverage between the two.  It would indeed be very interesting to construct a corresponding pie chart that depicted the level of media coverage of each group.  The reason that Muslim apologists and their “leftist dhimmi allies” cannot recall another non-Islamic act of terrorism other than Waco is due to the fact that the media gives menial (if any) coverage to such events.  If a terrorist attack does not fit the “Islam is the perennial and existential threat of our times” narrative, it is simply not paid much attention to, which in a circuitous manner reinforces and “proves” the preconceived narrative.  It is to such an extent that the average American has no image of his head of any Jewish or Latino terrorist; why should he when he has never even heard of the Jewish Defense League or the Ejercito Popular Boricua Macheteros?  Surely what he does not know does not exist!

The Islamophobes claim that Islam is intrinsically a terroristy religion.  The proof?  Well, just about every terrorist attack is Islamic, they retort.  Unfortunately for them, that’s not quite true.  More like six percent.  Using their defunct logic, these right wingers ought now to conclude that nearly all acts of terrorism are committed by Latinos (or Jews).  Let them dare say it…they couldn’t; it would be political and social suicide to say such a thing. Most Americans would shut down such talk as bigoted; yet, similar statements continue to be said of Islam, without any repercussions.

The Islamophobes live in a fantasy world where everyone is supposedly too “politically correct” to criticize Islam and Muslims.  Yet, the reality is the exact opposite: you can get away with saying anything against the crescent.  Can you imagine the reaction if I said that Latinos should be profiled because after all they are the ones who commit the most terrorism in the country?  (For the record: I don’t believe in such profiling, because I am–unlike the right wing nutters–a believer in American ideals.)

The moral of the story is that Americans ought to calm down when it comes to Islamic terrorism.  Right wingers always live in mortal fear–or rather, they try to make you feel that way.  In fact, Pamela Geller (the queen of internet Islamophobia) literally said her mission was to “scare the bejeezus outta ya.” Don’t be fooled, and don’t be a wuss.  You don’t live in constant fear of radicalized Latinos (unless you’re Lou Dobbs), even though they commit seven times more acts of terrorism than Muslims in America.  Why then are you wetting yourself over Islamic radicals?  In the words of Cenk Uygur: you’re at a ten when you need to be at a four.  Nobody is saying that Islamic terrorism is not a matter of concern, but no more so than the acts of terrorism committed by people of other faiths.  So calm the bleep down, and continue living your life.

UPDATE:

A reader by the name of Dima added:

The FBI Terrorism Report shows…[that] the highest number of terrorist incidents in the U.S. by region (90) took place in Puerto Rico.

SECOND UPDATE:

An Islamophobe commented on this article, saying that the statistics are flawed because they would count small acts such as “stealing rats from a lab” as an act of terrorism.  Of course, this is patently false.  Here is a breakdown of the terrorist attacks by type (the pie chart is from the FBI’s official website and can be accessed here):

I guess your definition of 'terrorism' is reacting to thousands of rockets, suicide bombings and kidnappings.

I don't really expect a balanced opinion coming from people in Arab countries, but compared to Hamas, Hezbollah and every other terror group in the Middle East, Israel's actions are mild, calculated and restricted.

I'll add that Israel fights terrorists against its civilians, whereas the 'resistance' of the Palestinians always involves targeting Israeli civilians that have not done anything to anyone.

If we wish to discuss the casualties so far here are the stats since the second Intifade began:

Regarding the numbers of Israeli civilian versus combatant deaths, B'Tselem reports that through April 30, 2008 there were 719 Israeli civilians killed and 334 Israeli security force personnel killed.[1] In other words, 31.7% of those killed were Israeli security force personnel, while 68.3% were civilians.

The Israeli International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism (IPICT), on the other hand, in a "Statistical Report Summary" for September 27, 2000 through January 1, 2005 indicates that 56% (1542) of the 2773 Palestinians killed by Israelis were combatants. According to their data, an additional 406 Palestinians were killed by actions of their own side. 22% (215) of the 988 Israelis killed by Palestinians were combatants. An additional 22 Israelis were killed by actions of their own side.

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Intifada#Combatant_versus_noncombatant_deaths

I think these statistics are a good indication of how little many people know about the conflict and seem to dwell on some fabricated victimization of the Palestinians. No, Israelis are not going to just sit there and be targets.

First of All, most of resisting organisations in History were considered as terrorists group by the occupier countries, just to allow themselves to deal hard with them without pity and as out of law.

Second, Hamas and Hizballah are resisting organisations, which are fighting to leberte their lands from the occupier, which is Israel, and they have all rights to work for that, and all international laws give them this right.

If we want to talk about the attacks against civilians, there we can discuss, logacly it's not allowed to attack people who are not involved in the war, this is a basic rule, and I think resisting groups have to try to respect it, even sometime it confusing.

Why !! sometime the civilian peope are involved in the war, like what happens in occupied land of palestine (called Israel) or other lands (west bank), where the Settlers own woppeans and sometime allow themselves to attack the palestinians.

we can say that all the Israel's Civilians are realy civilians, but a good part of them are trained to be soldiers.

And that doesn't mean I give reasons to attack the civilians, but I just say,  that those kind of people are not considered as civilians.

about the weapens that some resistance groups in Hamas was firing, those rockets were just a respond of Israel killing of palestinians using F16 and woppeans and also the blockade of Gaza, they had nochoice, only to target the other side, to make them stop.

If Israel wanted them to stop, it has only to stop killing them, or what it wants !! to kill without beeing targeted!! it they had F16, they wouldn't throuw rockets in this way.

Israel is the reasons of many problems in this world, if it was not exited, the world would live better in peace,

if palestinians get their independence, we will see that 95% of terrorisms come from some of islamic organization group (like Qaida) will desappear. and Iran will stop its nuclear program, and many other issue will be solved.

This is my opinion.

Anyway, Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance, and the history in a prove of that.

when Islam  led the world in the past, it spread justice where it went

Muslims sould be in the central of people, as Allah says in holy Quran (bakara 143)

""Thus, have We made of you an Ummat justly balanced, that ye might be witnesses over the nations, and the Messenger a witness over yourselves""

Nigerian police and military units carried out extrajudicial killings last year in the aftermath of clashes with members of a Muslim group in the north of the country, footage obtained by Al Jazeera appears to confirm.

An estimated 1,000 people were killed as Nigerian government forces fought Boko Haram in Borno, Yobe, Kano and Bauchi states in July and August 2009.

But the footage obtained by Al Jazeera shows that many of the deaths occurred once the fighting was over.

Elements of the police and army staged a follow-up operation in which house-to-house searches were conducted and individuals were apparently selected at random and taken to a police station.

‘Shoot him in the chest’

In the video, a number of unarmed men are seen being made to lie down in the road outside a building before they are shot.

As one man is brought out to face death, one of the officers can be heard urging his colleague to “shoot him in the chest not the head – I want his hat”.

As the executions continue another man is told: “Sit properly we want to take your picture.”

The shootings continue as a crowd gathers further up the street in front of the police station.

Voices can be heard saying: “No mercy, no mercy.”

After the executions, the army officer who appears to have been in charge of the operation is seen to be handing over command to a senior police officer. Both men are clearly identified by the name tags on their chests.

The family of Baba Fugu Mohammed, a respected community leader, told Al Jazeera that he was among those put to death outside the police station.

“He was killed, he was killed, that’s what we believe. He was shot by the police,” one relative said.

Fugu Mohammed was the father-in-law of Mohammed Yusuf, the Boko Haram leader whose group had battled the police, but the two had become estranged.

His family said that he had come to help police restore order, but was shot.

‘Killings of the innocent’

In the days following the clashes between the police and Boko Haram, the government, police and military repeatedly denied that civilians had been killed by their personnel.

But Nigerian officials have since acknowledged that extrajudicial killings took place and an inquiry was set up to investigate the incident.

“It was obvious [from] what we have seen and from the eye witnesses that the government police were doing the killings of the innocent,” Abubakar Umar Garda, a senator and a member of Nigeria’s ruling People’s Democratic Party party, told Al Jazeera.

“The government is investigating the incident and as we go along the perpetrators will be put in front of the law and the law will take its course … the government acknowledged that this was a crime against humanity … you cannot shoot an unarmed civilian.”

Fugu Mohammed’s family have given their story to the government commission set up to investigate the events that took place, but they are still waiting to receive an official explanation for the deaths.

Senator Umar Garda could not confirm to Al Jazeera whether there had been any arrests relating to the killings and there have been few tangible signs of the inquiry bringing anyone to account.

Boko Haram leader killed

Aster Van Kregten, a Nigeria expert with rights group Amnesty International, told Al Jazeera that the group’s research suggested extrajudicial killings were widespread in Nigeria.

“Our research shows that the Nigerian police are getting away with murder, they killed hundreds of people a year without any investigation – any investigation on whether the use of force was lawful or not,” she said.

“What we saw on the footage happened seven month ago and we haven’t heard anything from the government whether they have arrested anyone and how far the investigation is going.”

Among those killed in the aftermath of the clashes between Boko Haram and the police, was Boko Haram leader Mohammed Yusuf.

In the Al Jazeera footage, he is seen wearing handcuffs and surrounded by heavily armed police officers.

Nigerian police have said that Yusuf was killed while attempting to escape, but he died still wearing the handcuffs.

In another video, which was made available shortly after last year’s fighting, Yusuf is shown inside the police station, his body covered with marks and bruises, as he is questioned about the organisation that he led.

It is not known whether the injuries were caused during the fighting, arrest, or detention.

‘Extrajudicial killing’

The New York-based Human Rights Watch described Yusuf’s death as “an extrajudicial killing”.

“The extrajudicial killing of Mr Yusuf in police custody is a shocking example of the brazen contempt by the Nigerian police for the rule of law,” Eric Guttschuss, the organisation’s Nigeria researcher, said.

Boko Haram, which means “Western education is prohibited” in the local Hausa dialect, has called for the nationwide enforcement of a strict interpretation of Islamic law, or sharia, even among non-Muslims.

Last year’s clashes took place after suspected Boko Haram members, armed with machetes, knives, bows and arrows, and home-made explosives, attacked police buildings and officers.

Nigeria’s 140 million people are nearly evenly divided between Christians, who dominate the south, and the primarily northern-based Muslims.

Islamic law was implemented in 12 northern states after Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999 following years of military rule.

I believe we have to say

We have brutal killers in all religion, there is no exception !!!!!

We have very nice members on english baby, we have friends not matter of their religons

But we have to  notice, that also in our small community, called english baby ,

there are  many stupid and narrow minded ppl, not able to think about things byx their own, just talk or write rassist slogans

they found in their press or have seen in tv. I have travelled a lot during my life, have worked in various countries, have friends there. But never found ppl who hate me, because I m a western or a christian.

It depends on me, what I do !

When I don t pay respect to others, how they should to that to me

When I m agressive against other believers, why they should be good to me? it s the same, here at english baby, but also in our world.

Of course, don t like to meet a member of Al Quaida, but wont to meet a member of CIA or FBI or other radical acting departments, who kill ppl "in the name of law"

I know, it s a dream to live in a peaceful world, but

We here at english baby should find a way, to be peaceful to all members.

We should stopp using hateful words, using radical topics, should stop to say

we are better than others.

W E   A R E   N O T   BETTER  !!!

We are similar, not matter what colour of skin we have, or education.

We should be sisters and brothers.

End  of discussion !!!

And we should proud about, when we work for this target!

Hope, everybody will agree with that

Dear Reyhaneh.

I am not anti-muslim. I am an anti-extremist. And there are extremists in every single religion, even baptist extremists are walking around. I also haven't said there aren't jewish-american extremists, i've just said i've never heard about them. But I believe anti-muslim extremists are just a consequence of muslims actions, nothing else.

I want to make clear that I don't agree with the way you've judged people everywhere. For you all the non-muslims are going to hell and shit. All you post on this forum is… 'i hate israel', 'israel sucks', 'israeli people are gonna pay the price', then you call me racists. Just wanna say WE ARE NOT LEARNING ENGLISH HERE, BUT LEARNING HOW TO HATE ISLAM

FUCK ALL THE EXTREMISTS!

bom dia Marco

sorry, when I say, you are wrong with Reyhaneh.

Normally Reyhaneh is a nice girl, well educated and she likes normanl and goodwilling ppl. She a friend of mine here on english baby. Im German, I m Christian and we had nice mails to eachother.

Of course such words "I hate Israel", when they have written by her , are wrong.

But, pls have in your mind, what Israel did with Palestinensian human. They didn t kill terrorist only, no, they have killed woman and innocent children. Pls have in your mind, I wrote a mail to the prime minister and told him

You judge Germans for their brutalitty during 1939 to 1945. Did you make a difference to ´"normal Germans" who never killed jewish ppl?

I work in a social project in Bahia county, some of my friends have got injured by brazilian ganster. But, I never like to say "Brazilian are brutal"

You know the problems in your country, you know the brutalism in Favela areas, but you never say, citizen of Favelas are bad ppl. Am I right.

We have to show to others,

WE ARE WELL EDUCATED; WE ARE ABLE TO SEE DIFFERENCES; WE DON T JUDGE ABOUT ALL CITIZEN OF A COUNTRY OR ALL BELIEVERS OF A RELIGION:

The last thing, Al Kaida rquiered to make all terrorism. Sure most of them are Muslim, but as many member here said

THAT ARE NOT  REAL MUSLIM !!  NEVER EVER

They like to kill, because they love to kill, they didnt learn other things than killing or make trouble.

Have a look at Europe, we have similar things here . Hooligans in football. Those subjects just have one things in their head

make trouble, destroy, kill °!!

At last

Pls don t say we are learning to hate Islam

THAT MESSAGE IS THE WRONG MESSAGE

INSTEAD WE SHOULD LEARN

WE WILL LEARN TO LIVE WILL ALL PPL IN PEACE; NO MATTER OF COLOUR OUR RELIGION: All of us have been created by Godnobody got his/her life by devil.

Thanks, obrigado
