   It's a different culture. In Japan the Geisha start to exist in the 17th Century until today, though there are not so much of them left in comparison to that time. A very strict and professional education needs to be passed to be a Geisha. It's not only a profession, but a lifelong obligation. You're right, european people cannot imagine such a life. You also cannot think of slavery in this century, it is inhuman and unnatural for us to imagine.

Like was said above, many cultures do things that are hard for others to understand.  I think that's what makes our world interesting.

I read the book and saw the movie and must say that the book was much better.
