What is the different between “reveal” and “review”?

Say, which one of the following is better?

1. After revealing the document, I realized how important it is.
2. After reviewing the document, I realized how important it is.

Hi,

Great question! These two words appear very similar, but they have different meanings.

reveal (v.) = show or share something that was a secret before

review (v.) = (1) look something over in order to make changes; (2) study something to prepare for a test

So, your example sentences have different meanings, too. Number 2 is the most likely sentence to hear in English.

1. After revealing the document, I realized how important it is.

– This makes sense only if you never saw the document before. However, this would make more sense to me: “After she revealed the document to me, I realized how important it is.”

2. After reviewing the document, I realized how important it is.

– This makes perfect sense to me. You knew of the document before, but now that you have looked at all the details again, you know it is very important.

I hope this helps!

Best,

Amy
