1. Quote - Listen to the quote and guess what the slang means.

“She does give me advice, but I have this gift. I can tune people out, so I tuned her out. She was just kind of jabbering away, but I didn’t hear any of it so I couldn’t really tell you!”
- Jamie Lynn Spears (Britney’s little sister), star of The Mickey Mouse Club TV show, when asked if Britney gave her advice about being on TV.

Definition

1. Definition - Study the definition.

ignore, don’t pay attention to, disregard

2. Use - Learn how the slang is used.

When you tune out, your mind is not focused on the things that are going on around you. You are not paying attention to the things that are happening to you. For example, if your mother is telling you to clean your bedroom, you might tune out so you can’t hear her talking. Or, if you’re really bored in school, you might tune out and start thinking about doing something fun! But, be careful! If you tune out too often, your parents or teachers might get mad at you.

Examples

1. Examples - Hear some example sentences.

””I hate my math class. I’m not learning anything. When I’m in class, I just tune out the teacher and think about surfing.”“

””If your sister is bothering you, why don’t you just tune her out? Don’t pay attention to her. If you don’t talk to her, she’ll probably leave you alone.”“

””There was so much noise in the office that I couldn’t concentrate. I had to listen to some music so I could tune it all out and focus on my work.”“

””Jessica talks and talks and talks. She never shuts up. I have to tune her out sometimes so I don’t go crazy.”“
