Big Boi and Andre 3000 are the hip hop artists that have become world-famous in the group Outkast. They have a new album out, but this one’s a little different. It’s the soundtrack for a Hollywood movie that the
duo stars in. The movie is called Idlewild.

The film takes place during the 1930’s at a speakeasy in the South. The story focuses on two struggling performers there. One is a piano player. The other is a singer.

The Idlewild album went platinum, and the movie has been popular too. Listen to Mason and Amanda chat about it.

Mason:  I’m listenin’ to the Idlewild soundtrack, the new thing they got coming out.

Amanda:  And that movie pretty much releases in a couple days and I think everyone’sgeeked up about it.

Mason:  It looks, it looks pretty exciting. It’s, like, got that Moulin Rouge modern musical kinda thing but, you know, down in, like, the twenties speakeasy look.

Amanda:  Thirites.

Mason:  Thirties?

Amanda:  Thirties.

Mason:  OK. OK.

Amanda:  It’s all right. You were close.

Mason:  You’ve obviously done the research. Uh, but, no, I was listening to the soundtrack and I was a little surprised that the songs didn’t have this… as much nostalgic quality to them as I thought they would looking, you know, from the aesthetic of the film. Uh, the sound… it’s a lot of kinda, like, you know, weird electronic honky-tonk almost.

Amanda:  I agree. And that film… I think people are expecting the hip hop sound to come out but it’s even more about the costume and the dance and the story, even more than the music. Even though it’s Outkast’s stuff, it’s gonna be more about the story. And they pretty much play themselves.

Mason:  I’m just glad that, you know, like, Big Boi and, uh, and Andre...

Amanda:  3000?

Mason:  ...are back together. Yeah, dude, OK, anyone who puts a 3000 at the end of their name… I swear I’m just gonna name my kid a number. But, um…

Amanda:  Everybody’s doing it.

Mason:  But really, they’re back together. You know, the whole Speakerboxxx/Love Below thing was cool. I mean, it was probably great for them creatively and maybe gave them a a break. Who knows? I mean, I’m speculating. But really, in my opinion they do better as a duo.

Amanda:  I think it’s just their way of resurfacing. Getting back out there.

Discussion

Mason has listened to the Idlewild album, but he hasn’t seen the movie yet. He says the music is not what he expected.

Amanda hasn’t seen the movie yet either, but she knows a lot about it. She says that even though people will go see it to hear Outkast’s music, the movie is more about the costumes and the story.

Mason loves the name Andre 3000 because there’s a number in the name. He says he liked Outkast better as a duo.
