If you like bands like T Rex or singers like David Bowie or Elton John, you might like the Scissor Sisters. Although the band has the word “sisters” in the name, four of the five band members are men.

When the Scissor Sisters perform, they put on a lively show, with lots of costumes and a real sense of theater. Although they are from New York, they are on tour right now, playing live shows in different cities around the world. In fact, they’re playing in Osaka, Japan, tonight!

Kevin saw them live recently in Portland. Listen to him tell Mason about it.

3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.

Mason:  What sort of stuff you been listening to lately?

Kevin:  You know, I went and saw the Scissor Sisters recently, playing at the Roseland Theater.

Mason:  Oh yeah? Were they, like, the headliners? I haven’t heard of ‘em.

Kevin:  Yeah, it was just them.

Mason:  OK.

Kevin:  There was a, there was a DJ and then it was them. They were so much fun, they were…

Mason:  Wow.

Kevin:  They’re like a… the lead singer sings in a falsetto a lot. Sounded like the Bee Gees.

Mason:  Like The Darkness?

Kevin:  Like the Bee Gees. I don’t know The Darkness.

Mason:  You don’t know The Darkness?

Kevin:  No.

Mason:  They did that, uh, I Believe in a Thing Called Love.

Kevin:  Oh.

Mason:  There were, like, videos with lots of UFOs and monsters.

Kevin:  Oh, OK, well if you like that, maybe… I know you’d like the Scissor Sisters. They’re really fun, really outrageous. Sort of glam funk.

Mason:  Like Kiss? Is there a little Kiss theatrics in there?

Kevin:  A little bit. Not as, not as dramatic as Kiss.

Mason:  Not as… No fireworks?

Kevin:  No. No.

Mason:  OK.

Kevin:  Um, but really fun, um… They… and they’ve been really popular in, um, like, Britain and in Japan.

Mason:  OK.

Kevin:  US radio stations have not found a spot for them so…

Mason:  Are they from the States?

Kevin:  Yes. They’re from New York.

Mason:  From New York.

Kevin:  Yeah.

Mason:  Huh.

Kevin:  And, um, three of them are gay, three of the five are gay so they have a big gay following and they’re just really fun. They’re a great group.

Mason:  Excellent. Excellent.

Kevin had a great time at the Scissor Sisters show. He thinks they are a really fun band.

The band doesn’t get much radio play in the US. They are very popular in Europe and Japan.

Nope, I haven’t hear of this band before. The video feature is cool, it helps to understand the conversation better by looking at them, I guess. _
