Becoming fluent in speaking and writing English.

If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice: There are four skills in learning English which are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must bear in mind is that reading and listening are inputs whereas speaking and writing are outputs. In other words, if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening. There are some ways that you can do so, which I will try to summarize.

1) Reading

Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the structure, unfamiliar words etc as you read. There is no need that you stick to some complicated grammar structures or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them for example in other passages or books is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or structures in it. To begin reading, I recommend the Penguin Readers books. They are classified by level of difficulty.

2) Listening.

As for listening, there are two options:

a)Aside from reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes.

b)You can only concentrate on your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening....

I myself prefer the latter because when you are skillful and native-like at reading, your listening skill grows automatically. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening. For listening I recommend cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy and do not contain complicated phrases or slang terms. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to Englishbaby lessonsVOA or BBC programs broadcasted every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes. If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect

Agree with crazyshadow. Practice is the one key principle that promotes effective language learning. If you don’t have anyone to practice with in person, find an online language partner, either here ( yes, there are some decent ppl on here who are really interested in practicing) or go to www.language-exchanges.org. Can highly recommend both sites ;)

That indeed is the good way but you also need after every book or story that you finish reading it to write every new words that you learn it thats way you will improve both reading and writing skills. For listening there also the english songs that its a good way to improve listening skills, you have to listen to a songs with clear word for the first time then with time you will find your self understanding even the difficult one.

For me I love to read special for Agatha christie some times her writing is difficult to understand everything but its so good 😊

Hi Everyone,

My name is Bhasker, I am an engineer, would like to share few tips which really can help you guys in learning English or any other language.

Here, my profile name is ‘RiseSun’

The tips which i am going to share with you all, I have already practiced & followed them for a long time. I used to teach English, Mathematics and Computer earlier.

Tips are as follows:

1. You need to write down your schedule on paper/notebook in the evening everyday which basically helps you in learning following:

   a. Understanding Tenses

Activities that you did in the morning – will be written down in past tense

Activities that you have just completed – will be in Present perfect tense

Activities that you are doing – will be in Present Continuous tense

Activities that you will be doing – will be in Future tense

  b. Thinking ability and plaaning capability

  c. Learning new words and how to use them

When you do this exercise daily, it may be possible that you will come to those words which you can not transform or do not know appropriate english words for them, then you may need to check dictionary for them where you will learn those vocabs or words and their usage.

2. When you complete your schedule in writing, then you need to speak the whole schedule , that will help in improving your speaking skills.

If you face challenges in correctly pronunciating any word, then you should look for it into the website and turn on audio , so you can refer correct pronunication and try to practice that word 5 times.

Basically, you need to dream of everything in English.

In this way, you can improve your Reading, Speaking, Writing, understanding & thinking skills in English

Happy Learning!!

It gives me some ideas about what things should be considered while readings and listening. It also provides me the overall steps on how to go through the learning process in English. Thanks for your good lesson about “how to improve your speaking and writings. However, as said in topic, it lacks the techniques about the speaking and writing skills.

I am totally agreed with every word you have written. And even if it is the longest way to learn a language, reading again and again is the best thing that a learner can do. If we don’t read a lot we don’t have a consistent vocabulary in the mind and it’s useless to watch only movies or listening to the radio and so on without have acquired words before. Before we have to read after that we can listen to (even if someone can say the children learn from the sound of words that parents use to say them, but this is another point of view). Grammar is important but not so much. It depends the time a person to learn a foreign language, on the base of it we decide how much time we dedicate to the 4 skills.
I hope to not have made too much error in writing all this. Bye bye.
