It’s kind of surprising that the Hives achieved big success with their hit song “Hate to Say I Told You So” in the early 2000s. Not because it’s not a great garage rock song, but because the Swedes in white ties who played it seemed almost too cool for MTV and the Top 40.

But with songs so energetic and catchy, and shows known for being wild and unpredictable, how could anyone resist the Hives? After paving the way for bands like the Strokes, the Hives did some experimenting with disco beats on 2007’s The Black and White Album, while still keeping up the speed and volume of their first three albums.

Since the Hives are about to tour Japan, Jason got on the phone with their guitarist, Nicholaus Arson. He’s a pretty relaxed guy…until he gets onstage. The change in him is so big that some people think he has an alter ego. He has at least one known aliasRandy Fitzsimmons, which is the name of a mysterious character who helps the Hives with their songs but has never been seen. Some people think Nicholaus is Randy, but the Hives insist that Nicholaus just uses the alias so he can pick up Randy’s checks. Enjoy out this lesson from Nicholaus on alter egos and the term a.k.a..

i haven't had an alter ego till now.maybe i haven't find something which makes me as crazy as music does to Nicholaus.

the audiience's in japan is more calmer than those in the western countries.i think this is due to the different cultural backgrounds.it doesn't matter.

to me nicholaus is a songwriter as well sometime he uses alternate name to make shock and create suspicion to their fans. but anyway dont care abt that just interest songs they have been bringing us. also i want to little comment on japanese. i understand nicholaus said japanese people so serious in any fiels not only in music. maybe its good but not suit for rock not blow the fire and inspiration major key in hard rock. especially i dont want to live in patriarchal sociey like japan although standard of living in japan is much higher than vietnamTongue out

I hear about Hives first time too. I don't like this kind of music.

About alter ego… I think everyone has alter ego. At home we are one person, at work another. I think if you want to take something from your life you must have alter ego :)

to be honest,i seldom listen to rock music!i guess i just sorta don't like the noisy heavy metal music!

what's more,i think the contrast of the audiences' reflection is a good example to show the difference between culture!but i think it doesn't mean that the calm fans don't enjoy the music!as matter of fact, they had been drunk at it….LOL^^
