In order to waste money, you have to choose to spend it on something foolish. Time, however, passes whether you’re doing something useful with it or not.

Wasting time isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It can be fun. Everyone needs to relax sometimes, and as long as you don’t waste too much time too often, it can be good for you.

If you space out for too long though, it can get you in trouble. You can get behind on your responsibilities. It can also make you tired and you can start to feel bad about yourself.

In this English lesson about time, Sara notices that Jeff doesn’t appear to be too busy at the moment.

Sara:  What are you doing Jeff?

Jeff:  Just wasting time. I don’t feel like doing anything.

Sara:  Yeah? What do you do when you waste time?

Jeff:  Sit around...watch movies or TV shows that I’ve already seen…peruse the internet…

Sara:  Is it relaxing or it is frustrating?

Jeff:  I don’t know, it’s kind of frustrating to me because I always want to be doing something, but I don’t have a lot of energy a lot of the time, so that’s when I find myself getting sucked in to that trap.

Sara:  Yeah, I know what you mean. I usually like to be really productive, too, but sometimes you just suddenly realize that you’ve been on Facebook for half an hour or something.

Jeff:  Oh, yeah, that’s a big one for a lot of people I think.

Sara:  It is! I’ve heard you can get some blockers to kick you off after a certain amount of time.

Jeff:  I’ll look into this. Stuff like that, I get frustrated with myself when that happens, but I feel like sometimes having a moment to just do nothing is healthy in a way. You just need to balance that out with productivity.

Sara:  It’s true, like a Sunday morning when you can just sort of amble around the house, walk around the house and…

Jeff:  ...space out.

Sara:  Yeah.

Like almost everyone, Jeff wastes time occasionally. Sometimes he watches boring TV shows he has seen before or looks at the internet. Other times he just spaces out.

Sara asks Jeff if wasting time is fun for him or frustrating. He says it can be frustrating because he likes to be productive, but that it’s healthy to take a break and waste a little time sometimes. Sara agrees. She likes to amble around the house on Sunday mornings.

How do you waste time? How does it make you feel? Do you wish you wasted less time?

I was about to waste some time and space out  for a while before i decided to give Englishbaby a visit that encouraged me to learn some new words about watsing time in particular. So, now there is a good feeling that i used that time to my benefit at least! :-)

In my opinion, if u r working in a position u don’t like i consider it equal to wasting a time, and also if u don’t have a plan for ur day so you will waste much time than organizing ur day according to a specific schedule.

I said I like to wast time sometimes, but I see this expression like “give a break for a while” or something like that. But if you stop and think, you’re not “wasting you time” because you will take an advantage of this situation and I  totally agree with you, Nabilo! Mainly when you say

“I also find ambling around or hanging out with friends is not a kind of time wasting at all because we simply need to do that regularly in order to remain productive at work or during studying. I find wasting time is like when someone everyday sleeps longer than a human needs;) or sitting around and spacing out all the time because we don’t need that every time. It’s true that we need to be alone from time to time, but that could be kind of frustrating if we lose control of this.”

I feel that I NEED waste time sometimes, it’s good and give a break to you and your brain can relax a little bit. It’s relaxing and can even make you put your mind in order.

I like to space out, just thinking about life or others stuffs without importance, just thinking about the past and these things sometimes. It makes me feel good, calm and in peace, I think. It’s good to think about life sometimes and is also good to think about nothing :D Just relax and forget the troubles for a while!

It’s also good read, watch TV, surf on internet, listen to music, talk to people! And I don’t think that you won’t be productive doing that, you can be even more productive because you will be giving a break to yourself and it will calm you down and than you will be able to think clearly and it will let your mind fresh and able to think properly and have good, creative and new ideas.

May I suggest that maybe most of the time that is wasted, no matter how it is wasted – hours in front of a TV, hours lying in bed, etc. – that this wasted time is due to depression.  Would you suggest that depression is a matter of ‘choice?’ I would, non-professionally, say that maybe not, and that these ‘wasted’ moments are the mind’s way of trying to find some peace-of-mind – ‘wasting time’ may be the mind’s way of coping and trying to protect itself.  I have read something about a medical procedure called ‘cingulotomy.’  This may be a way for those people who habitually waste time to find some way of escaping their feelings of hopelessness – a natural feeling, maybe for depression.  Anyway, has anyone seen my TV Guide?  :)

well, I’ve been wasting a lot of time recently, being not very productive. Once I plan something to do the next day I’m usually not able to do in time or just a part of it. In fact I often feel to have so little time for my jobs and also think I should manage my time better, because if you always feel being pressed by time it makes you worried and nervous.

IRENE,  I am with you. We are  on this site  to learn english in a fun way, EB is a wonderful tool  to accomplish  it. As you stated, we are far from perfect ,we make mistakes  all along,  and nobody cares, what is important   is that members are willing to communicate  their thoughts  in a positive  way , mistakes are welcome , we all do , they are part of the process of learning .As everything in life ,  if we want to dance we have to go to the dance ball and dance ,at the beginning we  might  look awkward but with practice we could be  a new Fred Astaire  or Ginger Rogers.   lol.

As SEIYF    i have an interesting story about wasting our time.  Yesterday i came across a friend in the street, he was in the company of his son who is in his thirties  and with a severe case of autism,  nonetheless, I decided to start a conversation with him, soon to realize that I was wasting my time , but then  without looking at my ayes  he muttered a few unintelligible words .I knew that he was  responding me.   That made my day.

I agree with Jeff ,we have to find a  balance  in our life. Is not that we should be all the time workalcoholics or couch patatoes.  Now the catch is Internet, facebook, text massaging but what about  visiting  a museum,  the zoo, an acuarium, going out for  a walk and sitting in a park bench  feeding the pigeons, and at the same time basking in the sun. I don´t know, but I think Jeff needs to take some days off  to asses why  he is going  through  this dry spell , what changes are necessary  to  boost his vitality.

What is the wasting time?

When I enjoy of something then its not wasting time!

I waste my time when I have to do anything I dont like!

I have many responsibilities at my work , I never sit when I’m working!! :))

Also I have more responsibilities in my home!

Furthermore I do my handmades as my hobbies!

And when I’m sure I have done all my works I enjoy of being on Ebaby or talk with my dear friends or watching my favorite programs on TV!

If I didnt have these enjoyable times I couldnt work well because they give me energy and morale to work better!:)

Then there is no Wasting time for me! :D

I do not consider Ebaby as a waste of time. Nor do I consider sitting around, playing car races with my youngest brother, playing bowling with my friends, watching TV, especially the news channels, watching English or American soap operas on TV or my laptop, going to a cafe with my family or friends, going shopping, talking on the phone like a quick talk, though, unless an urgent business talk, sleeping or reading this comment as a waste of time. :)))

It all has a reason, but the point is they all should be done moderately, not excessively. If done, excessively, yeah, it is called “wasting time.”

Nabilo, each lesson given us from Ebaby is a wonderful gift we accept being grateful. Of course, people who knows English better than we do are our teachers here, and thank God I have them as my dear friends. The more we write, the better our spelling is, the more we talk, the closer we are to communication with others without thinking in our native language.

We are all not perfect here, I don’t mean native speakers, but we are all trying to do our best to be understandable by them.:)
