Marni:  Greta, I am so excited. You know what is just around the corner.

Greta:  I do indeed. The biggest night for Hollywood.

Marni:  Oscars 2013!

Greta:  I’m so excited.

Marni:  Me too! I love the Oscars, and I have to say, big part of it, guilty pleasure, is all the star-studded, red carpet fashion, who wore what, fashion dos and don’ts, what worked what didn’t, best dressed, love it.

Greta:  Oh, it’s true. I feel like the Oscars are fantastic, and then for the next week, all of the shows that just dissect what everybody was wearing, and what the red carpet was like, that’s almost just as good as the Oscars.

Marni:  Exactly. It’s like a week of Oscar festivities. But I am also excited about the actual award ceremony itself. You know, I’ve seen a lot of the films, and I always love seeing what wins for best picture and best actress and whatnot, because, you know, most people make predictions, and you think you kind of have some favorites and some shoo-ins, but then every once in a while, you get surprised.

Greta:  It’s true. So do you have a nominee that you really want to win?

Marni:  You know, this year I feel like there’s such a good, wide range of talent, and there’s some Oscar firsts, like the youngest nominee ever, for Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Greta:  And the oldest.

Marni:  Exactly. So I think it’s an exciting year.

Greta:  Yeah, I agree with you. I’m really looking forward to it.

Marni:  Alright, let’s make it a date.

Greta:  Great.

Marni and Greta are both very excited for the biggest night in Hollywood: the Oscars. They’re both excited to see what everyone’s wearing on the red carpet, and what everyone has to say about who’s dressed best and dressed worst. Marni finds it a bit of a guilty pleasure, but she still enjoys it.

Of course, they’re excited about the films, too. They agree that all of the nominated films this year are high quality, representing a wide range of talent. Even if the results are surprising, Marni thinks she’ll still be satisfied with who wins.

And Greta and Marni will definitely tune in to see if there are any firsts. The youngest actor (Quvenzhané Wallis for Beasts of the Southern Wild) or the oldest (Emanuelle Riva for Amour) might win an award!

Do you watch the Oscars, or a similar awards ceremony in your country? Do you like watching the celebrities on the red carpet? What is the best movie you saw last year?

Dear Madams and Sirs,

I do like the “sweet voice” of the two American ladies – Ms Marni and Ms Greta and would be grateful if you could tell me which states they come from. My congratulations to them!

Your English lessons are both useful and interesting to which /that I take my relatives in Vietnam every day.

A friend of mine, who is a lecturer at universtity, says that the lessons at “English, Baby!” include all the four skills for learners of English.

Actually, my relatives have made much progress in their English study, particularly /especially my 13-year-old nephew could understand every lesson by reading only once and my 15-year-old niece could “mimic /imitate” the American accent and intonation in the Dialogue. My heartfelt thanks to you for your lessons and I wish you the best of health, much happiness and every good succes in your daily service to the learners of English around the world!

Best regards,

Nguyen Anh Van

It is very good from you Ola33 “But not to take close to heart” because it is something we cannot get benefit from, we just enjoy it, so wherever prize goes that is does not matter. I cannot understand why some people (majority if I m not wrong) are mad of actors and actresses

You are right I Love life it is not a vital topic, but you can debate any prizes ceremonies not necessarily Oscar ones, you can describe what do you feel if you get a reward.

I love watching Oscars even though often I’m not able to see all the nominated movies. But I know what they’re about by word of mouth. Like my friend the other day called me sharing excitedly about worth-watching movie Beasts of the Southern Wild. I like watching the red carpet, how the stars are dressed, their behaviour, their words. Some of them are quite nervous and I understand – who will get the prize! You try to predict and then the prize will go totally to a different person than you hoped for. And you like, “No way”, “Why?”. But it’s better not take it close to heart. It’s just a show, and it’s already an honor that the movie, an actor is nominated and given credit to be one of the best!

After the show, I like to watch a number of shows the follow up Oscar week. Especially  that extravagant and stylish woman Joan Rivers. She’s got a sharp tongue but she’s very good at fashion.
