When traveling for business or pleasure, it’s common to rent a car. If you’re renting in the U.S., there are many companies to choose from. However, most of the companies ask the same questions when you rent.
Follow along with my conversation with a rental car agent last week and see how it’s done!

Agent

Agent:   Thank you for calling Dollar. My name is Christine. How many I help you?

John:   Yeah, I’d like to reserve a car from, uh, Portland Airport.

Agent:   Okay, one moment sir. I’d be happy to help you with that. And on what day did you want to pick that up at Portland International?

John:   I’ll need it tomorrow, August 16th.

Agent:   August 16th at about what time please?

John:   2 o’clock pm.

Agent:   2 pm, and returning it on what day and time please?

John:   August 17th at 4 pm.

Agent:   August 17th at 4 pm. And is this going to be for a mid-size car sir?

John:   Uh, let’s do economy.

Agent:   Economy? Okay. And are you a member of any automotive or hotel clubs?

John:   No.

Agent:   Okay. Well it looks like the best rate I’m showing for a driver 25 years of age or older with a major credit card is for the Hyundai Accent or similar. I have one day at $45.50 a day, unlimited mileage, I have two extra hours at $15.00 per hour, unlimited mileage. And the total with all taxes not including options would come to $98.74.

John:   Okay. That sounds good.

Agent:   And let me give you a confirmation number.

John:   Okay.

Agent:   Okay, it’s going to be “d” as in dollar, 8623264.

John:   And I just use that when I pick up the car?

Agent:   Yes, sir.

John:   Okay, great!

Agent:   Okay, anything else I can help you with?

John:   That’s it. Thank you.

Agent:   You’re welcome. Have a good evening.

John:   Bye-bye.

Agent:   Bye-bye.

Discussion

Are you ready to rent a car? As you can see, it’s not that difficult. They’ll just ask a few basic questions like where you want to pick the car up, when you want to pick it up and when you want to drop it off.
Have fun in your rental car and I hope you have a great trip!
Your American Friend,
John
