When we read books or watch TV and movies, we’re usually interested in them because they tell stories that are very different than our daily lives. They might introduce us to different countries, or a type of job we don’t know about. But there is a genre of fiction that can show us another world that doesn’t even exist.

Science fiction is based on a made-up idea of what the future will look like. It might show ideas of future technologies and how they affect people. Science fiction is interesting because even though it may not be based in reality, some people feel like it can tell the future.

Sara tells Kellie about a science fiction book she is reading and how much she likes it. Learn more in today’s English lesson about a made-up future.

Kellie:  Hey, Sara. Is that a science fiction book you’re reading?

Sara_R:  You caught me! It is. Do you read science fiction?

Kellie:  I don’t. I’m not really into the whole made-up sort of thing. I like things that are based in reality. But I’m always interested in what other people are reading.

Sara_R:  You should try it. I love the genre because it’s a great way to escape reality and live in another world. There are so many possibilities and ways that the future is portrayed. It’s just fascinating.

Kellie:  Tell me a little bit about this story that you’re reading.

Sara_R:  The story is that there is a whole race of people who are basically clones of real people. And the clones are the backups for if something bad happens to the real people. They can use the organs from the clones, or use the skin, or anything. Clones find this out and want to escape and be real people, which they are.

Kellie:  That’s interesting. I’d be keen to check it out.

Science fiction might not be a genre for everyone. But Sara is a big fan and likes that it can take her to another world. She says that science fiction can show us the many different possibilities for the future.

Kellie doesn’t share Sara’s interest in science fiction. She likes stories that are based on real life. But after Sara tells her about an interesting science fiction book that she is reading, Kellie is a little curious.

What do you think about science fiction? Is it something you enjoy reading or watching?

Julito, believe me I am also more than fed up with all negative information which goes from media :(

I decided to not watch TV,  to not read sites which provide political and other news.  Yes, I know I will be out of the loop but I will be calm and happy instead. :)

Julito, you have chosen aliens for the relaxing and I have chosen a cross stitching as a good  way of distraction of reality.

Dear kotlesya,  Thanks for your feedback on my post. i agree with you , our civilization , as we know it, is giving the first baby steps in  our galaxy . For me, i am fed up with all the bad news that   everyday TV news and newspapers are generously feeding us.  To watch alien documentaries on The History Channel makes me  forget  the reality of this world, at least the one that we see on the News , as if nothing good is happening in this world

Most people like strange things, extraordinary things and whatever people don’t know about them, scientists fictions are some things today are unusual.
people like doing something is impossible today like pass on the speed of light, imagine world with going from one place to another with the speed of light so watching a movie with this subject will be so interesting to us!
science fiction movies are imagination of world’s future! we make future with our imaginations, if we want to have a new world we need to imagine what we couldn’t do now.
Ok, try to fly our mind’s bird, imagine whatever you can think about, make the future!

Dear,  Julito you mentioned that you like to watch documentaries about presumable  life of aliens. I know that some people can be touched by the stories like that. But as for me,  I was always very sceptical about aliens.

Of course, nobody can prove or disprove their existence but probably the humanity is very primitive in their understanding that they pay no attention to us. If they exist, they might be going hundreds steps ahead in their development in all aspects.

The Earth is too young to be noticed :-)))

200 hundred years ago , human being rode in horse wagon and wished that some day could fly like a bird . Some thought it was crazy ideas , some thought it would never happen . So, basicly , science fiction is waiting for us to be happen.

What to ours ancestors were science fiction, now are so real that they don`t  fascinate us anymore. For instance, to name a few: space traveling, organ transplants , cyber communication. I don`t read fiction but I do like  to watch documentaries on alien life what for many is  a lost of time as they believe   there isn`t  tangible prove  that they exist .

I am not a fan of science fiction but I do agree with Sara_R that science fiction is a great way to escape reality and live in another world.

The recent book of science fiction I have recently read was a ‘S.N.U.F.F.” by Viktor  Pelevin . Despite of not having an affection to this genre of literature , I liked this book, really liked. I would recommend this book for my friends and to all people who like science fiction.

I enjoy reading science fictions once in a while because they portray a world which is totally beyond my wildest dreams, a world where all the impossible seems possible.

Moreover, they don’t make me cry buckets like the reality-based fictions and thus save me a lot of tissues.

To tell the  truth sciencfiction is not a genre for me, but I liked a science film very much. I don’t how it happened, but it admired me. Its title is Contact. The film’s main character is Jodie Foster. She was a little girl at the beginnig of the film and she tried to establish contact with aliens via her radio. Later she become  a scientist and found a strong evidence of extraterrestrial life. She had a possibility to travel to the space, but the spaceship seemed dropped into the spinning rings but it travelled through a series of wormholes and she could talk with alliens who appeared as her father. The story of this journey was marwelous for me, but the authorities secreted the testiomonies of this journey. Despit of these facts she was sure that she encountered with alliens. This was a very short plot of the film, but I think who watched this movie know how amazing film it is. i hope that there is somebody here who watched it.

Anyway I think that alliens somewhere ans and somehow exist, since the universum is gigantic. But there are many things in our world which were scincefiction some years ago like stem-cell, transgenic and so on.

I do love science fiction so much. It shows the future, some of them are not realistic but there are some realistic ones and I do love watching them.

Some technologies in these movies won’t be used in the future but some of them will. My favourite sci-fi movie is “Back to the Future”, it’s a classic. Yes, it’s very old but the thing I love about this movie is it shows what people predict about today 30 years ago and how many of them we have today. This movie was made in 1985, 30 years ago and in the movie they go 30 years forward in time so they come to 2015. Amazing. There are flying cars and different clothing styles we don’t have today but there are also some we all left behind years ago. Like holograms. But they couldn’t predict smart phones or tablet computers.

Who knows what kind of technologies we are going to have in 2045.

Science fiction is a genre of fiction in which the stories often tell about science and technology of the future.

Science fiction texts are often set in the future.
