Even though we try to eat healthily, we might not be eating all of the right foods. We can take a pill that has the vitamins and minerals that our bodies need. Supplements are an easy way to get needed vitamins.

But some people are too focused on vitamins. They might actually be taking so many pills that their bodies can’t absorb them. While supplements can be helpful, they can also be unhealthy if you are too focused on only taking vitamins and not eating right.

Marni tells Jessica about all of the different vitamins that she takes. Find out more in today’s English lesson about taking a pill a day to keep the doctor away.

Marni:  Oh, my goodness. My pill case… I don’t know where it is…

Jessica:  What? Why do you take so many pills?

Marni:  It’s not pills, per se. It’s just vitamins. I take a lot of supplements.

Jessica:  To get extra minerals in your diet?

Marni:  I like to take fish oil because I believe it’s going to keep me young. And I take probiotics because I think it’s good for your digestion. And I take a lot of vitamin D, because we don’t get a lot of sun here.

Jessica:  Wow.

Marni:  And I take lots of calcium and magnesium and all that stuff.

Jessica:  My goodness. I just take a multivitamin. I sometimes worry that I’m going to exceed my RDA, my recommended daily allowance.

Marni:  Oh, really? I just take as much as I want. I don’t ever worry about that.

Jessica:  I focus on my diet and hope that what I’m eating will then absorb into my body the way minerals do.

Marni:  I just feel like if I don’t take all these supplements, I just am missing something. I just feel like covering all of my bases that way.

Jessica:  Maybe I should look into this a little bit more.

Marni:  Maybe you should. Maybe I should take less. Maybe we’ll learn from each other.

Marni is a little worried because she doesn’t know where her pill box is. She’s stressed because she takes a lot of vitamins and supplements. She thinks that if she doesn’t take her pills, then she’ll be unhealthy.

Jessica is a little shocked that Marni is so worried about her vitamins. She only takes one multivitamin, compared to all of the different pills that Marni takes. Jessica would rather not take more vitamins and minerals than the recommended daily allowance.

Do you take vitamins? Why do you feel like you need to take supplements?

I used to take vitamins but not now,but because these days foods aren’t nutrious we need supplements for sure.

Yes it depends on many factors to be healthy! Not only foods and weather but also living in peace and having no stress help a lot!


Social situations , economic crisis and politics affect on our health too!

Yes, I agree with you. If there is a need in taking vitamins daily or the doctor recommends that…it’s right. Of course, there are special cases you tell about such as the place where we live, ecology, way of wearing and condition of the health. And I’m sorry about your mother. In general, it depends on many many things…

I don’t take vitamin pills too. I can’t say I eat healty food but I stay away from pills as long as possible, even the vitamin pills. 


Being healty is not easy in this age. We can’t be sure if a fruit or vegetable is really natural. And trying to live a healty life is really expensive too. Organic foods are like gold, not so easy o buy. And having regular check ups. I am not saying it’s not necessary, it totally is but it’s not really easy to live a very healty life in this age. Well, what to do. All we need to do is to do the best we can to protect our physical and mental health.

Thanks for your sound comments, dear Mahtab. You make us talk and add flavour to our discussions. I guess it’s the supplements you take that keep you full of zip. 


It’s quite understandable why you are taking vitamins and minerals. Each of us has a different system and our needs differ. 


By the way, most of my friends take biotin to keep their hair thick and shiny. But my mother pours coconut oil on my scalp every Saturday and it’s a messy job just like henna. 


I’m really sorry to hear about your mother. I hope cancer will be just a zodiac sign one day, not an illness.

Actually I dont like medicines but as I told before foods , drinks and weather are different from one country or area to another one!


The fact is the way of our wearing is very different with many other places!All my body is covered then my skin hasnt seen sunlight for a long time!


We live in apartments that have not enough sunlight too then everything I did I couldnt take enough Vit D!


Many women have this problem in my country!


On the other hand I feel our vegetables and fruits and also diaries , meat and …. are not healthy enough!Maybe when I was younger I didnt have such problems but when we get older the deficiency of vitamins appears!


I stopped to take pills for a long time and tried to have healthy food as I do still that way!


Not canned foods , not soda, only fresh juices , less meat , more veggi and so on but when I did my blood tests everything was less than normal!!!


Also we are living in very polluted city that affect on many health factors!You cant find any one who hasnt seen at least one person between relatives who didnt get cancer, as you know I lost my mom by cancer and also my dad survived of cancer!


Then what can we do now?!


Regular visiting doctors and take pills to prevent the affects of our life style!


Yes I used henna few times but using that wasnt easy like dying with chemical colors!

I am not against multivitamins and supplements, actually, at my age  it would be recommended for me a daily intake of antioxidants to clean the arteries. As in the case of Marni,( and i also know of some people that  their kitchen cabinet is loaded with any kind of herbs , pills and whatever  miraculous dietary supplement is on the market ) I think that Marni is overdoing it , instead of spending so much money  on nutrient   pills,a good diet and exercise, plus  mild sun baths for vitamin D will  keep her strong and healthy.

I used to take a multivitamins course only 1 or 2 times in a year…We all live in different parts of the world so we have different food depending on season. Therefore that’s good possibility to provide your organism with vitamins you need sometime (or special time of a year), even it’s a pill box.  I heard some doctors recommend to take vitamins by natural way eating health food, vegetables, fruits ect. They say that the vitamins pills we take also contain some unnecessary and harmful chemicals… So the best way in taking vitamins is eating health food. But if we don’t have it from time to time and need it… we can easily fill the body with pills :))

Mahtab, I love henna. It doesn’t only dye your hair but is a good mask as well. I add in there also paprica and ginger.

Vitamins. No I don’t take multi ones, but I take 3 kind of supplements – tumeric, gingo biloba and cayolic garlic.  They’re very good for you. I also like black pepper and olive oil. Multivitamins I take from my daily salads. You know when you have people around all into healthy eating, it’s kinda rubbs off on you and you start thinking about eating healthily too. About salt wich should be pink and Hymalayan. about sugar wich is coconut one. Well, it’s all a new habit wich is nice. We should think about our body. One positive discovery want to share. You propably know that after having a substantial lunch, we all feel drawsy, worn out and even coffee is not a good helper in here. It’s first 1,5 hours when we struggle not to fall asleep. But try eating salad. Not only it will cover all of your bases but you’ll be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for the rest of the day! :)

i never take pills and supplements because perhaps they give me some essential mineral and vitamins ,in the other hand they will hurt to some members of myy body such as kidney,stomach,liver and so one…in my opinion we should get vitamins by nutral ways however most foods and vegetables and fruits that we eat become artificia!!!!!!

I sometimes feel sick and not in good condition so I take multivitamin, I didn’t believe taking vitamins in general, but gradually I thought I need them!
I believe today our food and weather are contaminated with toxic substances and this makes our body fails to properly absorb vitamins and minerals so we need to take supplements.
I see some people around me take a lot of pills regularly. I don’t believe taking regularly a lot of pills, because it may be harmful to our body.

ı dont take any vitamins..but ı believe vitamine supporting is very useful,healty and necessary in lack of some vitamins ..


Simple and unchanging rule in life, Body needs health ( mentally and physically ) ,heart needs love and soul needs serenity..and everything depends on the balance among them ..

Of course you are very young to need them!


No need to take different kind of pills or medicines when you dont need!


I tried few times to be away from these things but the result wasnt good! :(


Of course I eat well and I have enough activity but I think foods and weathers are different in countries!


Not only me but also all people I know and they are at my age need to take vitamins and supplements!

No, I don’t take any vitamins.


I’m fit and fine now. I just wake up, eat, work, study and then eat again and go to bed. No time to worry about whether I’m covering my bases or not. 


All in all, I’m too lazy to fret about complications related to my health in future. And too poor to spend my hard-earned money on these pills which are quite expensive in our country.

I had taken Vitamin B2 for a while as follow doctor’s instruction. i only take calcium tablet right now.I prefer to do more excerise, get a lot of sun and balance food rather than take those vitamins.Vitamins could be got from vegetables and fruits.

I have a drugstore at my home full of any kind of Vitamins , minerals and supplements and I take pills everyday! :))


Of course I take them based on my blood test results and doctor’s recommendation then I dont exceed my RDA


Now I’m taking Vitamin D , Fefol and a suppliment  for my hair and skin! :D
