There are many ways to improve your ability to spell, but the most important thing you must have if you want to develop your skills is the desire to get better. Once you’ve got the right attitude, you’ll find that the rest is easy!
Here are five ways you can develop your spelling skills:
1. Read books for fun
Reading (in English) will help you recognize words and understand context. If you read for fun, you’ll feel more relaxed and will quickly become more confident.
2. Learn the meaning of words
When you encounter a word you don’t know, look it up in the dictionary. Knowing the meaning of a word will help you understand how its spelled.
3. Break words into syllables
Start to recognize the parts within words and then break them down into their components. For example, “impossible” can be broken down into “im-poss-ible.”
4. Study common word parts
Learning about prefixes and suffixes will help you quickly break words down. For example, the prefix “pre” means before and is in words like “prehistoric” (before history) and “preflight” (before flight).
5. Set a schedule for yourself – and keep it!
Just like with any other subject, with spelling practice makes perfect. So set a study schedule for yourself (for example: 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week) and stick with it.
