Now that I have kids, I’m probably more overprotective than I’ve ever been. My wife’s nickname for me is ‘red alert.’ I sometimes check just to see if the kids are breathing. But I try not to be a helicopter parent.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

When you were growing up, did you have strict or flexible parents? Did your mother or father watch your every move? In the United States, we have a term for parents who are too worried and too focused on what their children are doing. We call these types of parents helicopter parents.

A helicopter parent is the type of parent that will watch your every step. Helicopter parents love their children very much but want to control everything their children do. For example, if your mother or father is talking to your teachers and your sports coaches everyday, then he or she is a helicopter parent. If you have a small child, and you control how he plays, or you never let him get dirty, you are a helicopter parent.

Do you have helicopter parents?

My parents are protective of us but not to the extent of hovering over us in every move, maybe because we are now grown up and they take it well that we can handle our things by ourselves.

I’ve been a mother for almost twenty years. So I guess I am a little out of the loop when it comes to reading parenting books or magazines. I googled “Helicopter parenting” and geez, now parents are categorized by being either a heli or lawnmower parent (raising eyebrows). Of course, there is no silver bullet when it comes to parenting. Since my girls have different personalities, I used different types of parenting with different types of support. After all we can’t protect our children from everything or everyone. A balanced and safe upbringing where they can learn for themselves is in my opinion more important than wrapping them in cotton wool.
