If the weather is sunny and rainy at the same time, you might see a rainbow in the atmosphere! Rainbows have seven colors. Do you know all of them? Some people use the name ROY G. BIV to remember the colors we see in a rainbow. Each letter in the name is a color: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. We see these colors when the sun shines through the rain or mist.

There are many different stories about rainbows. In Ireland, people believed there was a pot of gold (and maybe a leprechaun!) at the end of a rainbow. In Eastern Europe, people believed you could change from a man to a woman, or a woman to a man, if you walked under a rainbow. In Italy, the colors of the rainbow were a sign of peace. In other countries, people believed a rainbow was a bad thing. Do you appreciate rainbows?

Learn what Kelsey and Gary think about rainbows in today’s English lesson.

Kelsey:  Did you see that rainbow yesterday?

Gary:  Ah! It was so big!

Kelsey:  I know, it was beautiful. And you know, my favorite thing about rainbows is that it means that the rain is over.

Gary:  I can very much appreciate that. I’ve got to tell you, I actually like when I see the nice mist coming down because I think to myself “here comes a rainbow!”

Kelsey:  Have you seen a double rainbow before?

Gary:  I haven’t. Wait, a double rainbow?

Kelsey:  Yeah! I’ve only seen them on the internet.

Gary:  A double rainbow?

Kelsey:  Yeah, you know, I don’t really know how it works. It’s amazing. It has something to do with the atmosphere.

Gary:  My understanding of rainbows… how that works… light gets broken up through the spectrum, and we can see all the colors, but I don’t understand how we could have two rainbows at the same time. Are there two pots of gold at the end of the rainbow?

Kelsey:  You know, I don’t know. All I know is that it’s possible.

Gary:  Whoa! I want to go find a double rainbow now.

Kelsey:  Let’s do it.

Gary:  Whoa!

Kelsey and Gary both saw a rainbow yesterday. They agreed that it was beautiful and big. Kelsey and Gary live in a city with lots of rain and lots of rainbows! Kelsey likes rainbows because she knows it means the rain is stopping. Gary can also appreciate rainbows. He likes the moment when the rain changes to mist because he hopes he will soon see a rainbow in the sky.

Kelsey has seen a double rainbow before but only on the internet. She asks Gary if he has ever seen a double rainbow. Gary hasn’t. He doesn’t understand how two rainbows can be in the sky at the same time, but he knows that we see the colors of a rainbow after light gets broken up in the atmosphere. Kelsey and Gary talk about the idea of a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. They want to find a double rainbow together so they can have two pots of gold.

Do you see many rainbows where you live? Have you seen a double rainbow?

I saw a rainbow almost a month ago, it was after several years. I love rainbow, rainbow means to me raining, fresh air, I appreciate rainbows.

I don’t remember when I exactly saw a double rainbow, But I am sure I have seen a double rainbow.

I haven’t read or heard stories about rainbows, these stories are interesting for me.

Living in a city the chances are odd that i might see a rainbow up in the sky. I like rainbows with its amazing display of colors . When i happened to see one, my first thought was that after a storm, no matter how fierce it was ,always there is hope of a future with better and shiny days.

No. I haven’t seen the rainbows. I think it should be true but only that I haven’t paid attention to it.

All about the rainbows I have known are from the cartoon and books and TV.

One story I knew about the rainbows was that it was the place that the fairies were walking.

I have seen many double rainbows. Actually it’s more common han you think and less surprising because all rainbows are formed double but second one is very faint and is not always visible.
