January 6, 2010

On the morning of New Year's Eve, December 31, I was on my way home when I came across a poor, impoverished kid, around 8 years old, sitting at the steps of the Metro Rail Station. For some reason, my heart went out to the kid. Here I am, anticipating New Year's eve celebration with lots of food (and I happen to skip my lunch previously so I still have my food left) while this kid is resigned to the fact that he may have to crunch again and wait till someone will be kind enough to give him food. (I'm being wordy here, but can you blame me?)

My heart kept on aching and for some reason I really cannot get that image off my mind, so I decided to go back the steps, called out the boy, and asked him if he wants leftover food, plus something that I can buy for him. He politely declined, was about to stay in those steps, when I offered to buy him food. He stood up and followed me to Mister Donuts, which I bought him five donuts of his choice. He was nine, but his physique is no more than that of a six-year old. His parents are nowhere to be found, and he's homeless. I wanted to do more, but he ran away as soon as he thanked me for the donuts. I guess he thought I might turn him in to Social Services.

You know what? My grin was from ear-to-ear that day. It was an exhilarating experience for me. The best Christmas is when you give to someone a portion of yourself. And I know that one good deed affects everyone. I was happy, and I ended the old year with something to look forward to the next year.
