Thank you for your kind comments. As for being able to write 'well' in English - or in any language for that matter - is a matter of practice, practice, and more practice. I still have not reached the level of mastery that I desire. I study grammar every day, and as you may well note, I need to spend more time studying and practicing to get it right - to get it down to an art. I want to be able to express myself with words - expressing myself with a coloring of my thoughts and ideas with all the colors of words. I have read that color is how our eyes and brain interpret light. Our eyes can only see radiation with a wavelength of 380 nanometers to 740 nanometers - and all this is thought up or formed in our brains. So if that is right, we humans should be able to see many colors that could be visually expressed and formed by words - plus then all the various sizes, shapes, textures, etc. That's quite a lot. There are some 750,000 words in English (again, not my count :)) that one could possibly express him or herself with a coloring of many words. Wow! Now that is expression. jeje

Anyway, thanks again.

Take care,

doni

I am surprised that I have received any responses to my texted thoughts.  I use this medium - such as Ebaby, as well as other sites - as a means of mirroring my thoughts so as to be able to analyze my thoughts from a worm-bird's perspective.  I am sure that from an introspective or subjective view that I hold many unchecked biases to the importance or rational of my thoughts - I want to be able to stand back and analyze my thoughts from a more objective sort of angle.  As well, I use these sites as storage units - 'ejournals' - for my thoughts.  And too, I try to create within myself a sort of interactive debate or dialectic self-dialoging within myself to help better justify my view points.  I am an extremely immature writer and thinker.  I use these e-exercises as a means of strengthening my thinking and writing abilities. I am working on a novel that is based on a very controversial subject.  I need to study and learn so much about human behavior so as to present my subject with some sense of knowledge and compassion for the tender subject that I will be writing about.  I want to possibly leave a reader torn between possibly his or her moral convictions and yet have him or her going away feeling possibly some sense of caring for that which might even be a threat to that conviction.  I don't want to appear as arguing or undermining that which anyone may otherwise find reprehensible and make a reader feel guilty for possibly not having compassion or understanding for that which may counter or even possibly threaten his or her convictions of morality or justice.

Hello Doni,

It's considered that 3000 words are the highest the average person uses in any given day or week. In fact we tend to stick to the words we know and used on a daily basis. So,  the vocabulary we use is almost the same. Average American, British, Canadian, Ukrainian etc know the meaning of 75 thousand words but they don't use them actively.

To make the writing a kind of art, we must know as many words as we need for the particular case.  In my oppinion, beautifully arranged writing depends on a person's skillfulness in his own language. The more a person  is eloquent and expressive per se, the more beautiful and convincing his/her speech or writing must be.

William  Shakespeare used about 25 thousand words in his works, and 1700 words of  them were invented by him. You can do the same to enrich your vocabulary. What is interesting, more than 50 of them are still in use.

Every person is impressive in his own way. So are you. It's always a pleasure to read your writings, and I'm looking forward to drop at your blog  for getting a valuable ideas again.

Thank you, Doni.:)

Irene

I very much like the title of your blog and I am glad to see how ambitious you are. Nobody knows exactly how many words there are in the English language. Not even the largest dictionaries have tabulated all the technical terms. new words are coming into English all the time, especially on the internet. Old words are falling out of use, especially as technology becomes outdated. To quote David Crystal, a well known linguist:

Whatever the total of words in the English language was yesterday, it will be different today. And that's a fact:)

Fact also is - and many careful studies showed that the average native speaker knows about 20,000 base words. And that's receptive. So relax a little and enjoy the great English as you speak it.

But back to your title...Words and the variations in language can bring out a huge range of emotions in people. I like to create a rainbow with words. Each language is like a toolbox filled with tools to use for the proper occaison. In order to make those tools effective, the craftsperson has just to use them ;)

It was interesting to read your thoughts...thanks :)
