I believe that the relief from guilt comes by doing at least the following—there may be more.

1.   1.  See the reason for your feelings of guilt—recognize why you are feeling guilty.

2.    2. Admit to yourself that the reason that you are feeling guilty is valid.

3.   3.  Desire ridding yourself of such feelings.

4.   4.  If it was an act that you did to yourself, apologize to yourself and ask for self-forgiveness; you must then promise yourself never to do whatever it was that hurt you again—and then never do it again, and then take yourself out for an ice cream, or something organic—whatever you like best.

5.    5. If you have hurt another, you must follow the steps of number 4, but for the other person.

6.   Note:  What is most important in all of this—I think—is self-forgiveness.
