The concept is that "I" is a singular pronoun and that "are" is a verb that can suggest more than 'one'--meaning, the "I" is made up of many--many influences such as social, familiar, religious, etc. So "I" rather, "we". "Who are we or 'I'?" Too weird? Sorry.
