(Three US Auto Chiefs Driving to Washington for Help)

The top executives at the so-called "Big Three" U.S. automakers are driving to Washington in hybrid cars for hearings later this week that could determine the fate of their ailing companies. The chiefs of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler were criticized by lawmakers for flying to hearings earlier this month in private jets.

The executives are expected to present Congress with detailed plans on how they would use billions of dollars in emergency aid. Some lawmakers have been reluctant to approve the aid, but on Tuesday, G.M. and Chrysler warned they might not survive past January without government intervention.

Meanwhile, leaders of the main autoworkers' union are holding an emergency meeting today in Detroit. Union officials say they will look at making new concessions in their contracts to help keep the car companies in business.

(China Criticizes Sarkozy for Meeting Dalai Lama)

A Chinese state-run newspaper has sharply criticized French President Nicolas Sarkozy for meeting with Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama on Saturday.
The lead editorial in today's (Monday's) English-language China Daily newspaper called Mr. Sarkozy arrogant, and said that he would only have himself to blame for the consequences of his actions.

China had asked Mr. Sarkozy not to attend the meeting, which took place at a gathering of Nobel Peace Prize winners in the Polish City, Gdansk.

The commentary said China's government can choose whether it will purchase Airbuses or Boeings, but it cannot make consumers buy French brand names such as Louis Vuitton or goods at (the French grocery store chain) Carrefour.
