China has arrested an unspecified number of taxi drivers for their alleged participation in a violent protest this week in the southwest city of Chongqing. The official Xinhua news agency says police in Chongqing have stepped up patrols to maintain public order following the arrests.

Police in Chongqing - China's fourth largest city - have announced that all nine-thousand of the city's cab drivers have returned to work. Cabbies in Chongqing began the strike on Monday to protest unfair competition from unlicensed drivers, high fines for traffic violations, and a shortage of compressed natural gas used to fuel most taxis.

(China Jails Employees of French Retailer Over Fatal Stampede)

Chinese state media say a court in the western city of Chongqing has jailed two employees of French retail giant Carrefour for their role in a fatal stampede.

China's official Xinhua news agency says the court sentenced security guard Duan Chengwei to three years in prison, and his superior Xiang Xuexin to two years. The incident at a Carrefour store in Chongqing in November 2007 killed three people and injured another 31.

Duan placed a table in the entrance to the store to slow the flow of people during a sales promotion. The move instead prompted customers gathered to buy discounted cooking oil to stampede.

Last year, Carrefour issued a letter of apology and received a 68-thousand dollar fine for the incident.

Chinese authorities have since imposed a nationwide ban on limited time sales.

Up in arms:get angry on something.

All us students are up in arms at the news the school is raising our tuition ten percent.

No way am i going to vote for a bill to raise income tax again. The voters back home are already up in arms about how much the government takes out of their pay already and i have to run for re-election this fall.

We are up in arms about his wife's public affairs with another man, that's disgusting.

All the people are up in arms for the serious traffic situation,it could not even move  an inch when people are on the way to office in the morning.

at arm's length;to keep someone at arm's length: keep distance with others;keep away from somebody.

I keep trying to get friendly with that lovely blonde who sits next to me in biology class. But she keeps me at arm's length.

I am wondering why my husband keep me at arm's length recently?

Let me warn you about this Smith fellow. He seems like a nice, friendly guy.But it's wise to keep him at arm's length. You get too friendly with him,and the first thing he'll do is ask to borrow money from you.

It's not polite to keep the poor boy at arm's length just because he has been ever a thief, nomatter how you should give him a chance to change.

With open arms:passionate;enthusiastic

My family received me with open arms when i came back from my trip to California.

Tibet's people are always with open arms to any of her visitors.

Jim picked me up with open arms when i suddenly appear in his city.

Nerd:the people who are intersted in books, good at study, but not be welcome in the social occasions

Robert is always considered as a nerd ,just because he don't want to hang out with others even at the weekend.that's weird

Sally was ever a nerd in her class, but now, look, she is a successful woman in the computer industry.
