  1.     Everyone knows the Monkey King. He appears in TV shows, films, books and comics all over the world. One of the reasons I am fascinated by him is because I was born in the year of the Monkey. Although I take Chinese astrology and horoscopes in general, with a huge pinch of salt, I am rather pleased to be a monkey. I like his mischievous, merry character。
  2. I can’t remember how old I was when I first discovered him, but it was certainly before I got into my teens. However it wasn’t until much later that I started reading “Journey to the West”. I have the six volume unabridged version with me here in Beijing. One page is in Chinese and the facing page is in English. I have read the first volume but I am afraid I don’t think I will ever finish it. It is a fantastic fantasy and wonderfully imaginative, equal to anything in the Lord of the Rings, but it is just too long. The writing is so densely descriptive that seems rather long winded for modern tastes. I think I will have to try one of the many abridged versions there are here for sale in the bookshops around Beijing。
  3. Since living in China I have discovered that “Journey to the West” is, in fact, based on a real journey. Xuanzang made his epic pilgrimage to India and back in the 7th century. It took him eighteen years. Recently there have been various attempts to retrace his journey. Often the traveller then writes a book about his or her adventures. I have read one by a Chinese women, called Sun Shuyun, entitled “Ten Thousand Miles without a Cloud” and I attended a talk by an Indian woman who did the journey in reverse. She travelled from southern India to China and she talked about her experiences at a popular Beijing bookstore called “The Bookworm。”
  4. I can’t claim to have done the whole journey but I have been to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an. This is Xuanzang’s monastery, where he spent years of his life, and I climbed the sixty four metres to the top of its seven storeys. There is a big statue of Xuanzang in front of the temple area, which is a hot tourist spot with shops and restaurants cashing in on the monk’s popularity. The pagoda itself is old and majestic and offers great views over the city. I enjoyed my visit to Xi’an. There is fine city wall, unlike in Beijing, and a great eating area around the Great Mosque of Xi’an。

Now I am a high school student. I have a lot of pressures. In fact my school life is not colorful. The school life is very busy and exciting.I am going to shool from Monday to Saturday, and every day in school I am very busy.      Everyday I have lots of homework to do. Sometimes,I don’t want to do these homework…….     In the morning,I have 5 lessons and in the afternoon I have 4 lessons.Of course I take two hours to go home for lunch. And we begin classes at 7:30am.,the school is over at 5:50pm.After school, sometimes I’ll stay in the classroom..     Our school is small but clean and beautiful. There are many trees and flowers around it. In order to make our school more and more beautiful we should try our best to keep it clean. Don't throw rubbish on the ground. We are members of Xinhua High school. I have made many new friends and we often help and learn from each other in study. When in my school, we often talk to each other. We are very happy.   We have 3 PE lessons once a week. I like playing table tennis and badminton. In school,I have 9 important subjects. But I some subjects which I don’t like. Such as: Physics or Chemistry. I think they are a little difficult and boring. I like History and Politics very much. I love English as well, but my English grade is very bad. So, I want to improve my English grade. Would you help me ?       We have studied in Xinhua Middle School for several months. When I first went into the school gate and saw my new classroom and teachers I thought I would have a new start . Our teachers have taught us a lot . They not only teach us how to study but also teach us how to be a useful person in society. They tell us is a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing well and many other things. Habit is a second nature, so teachers often remind us to make a good habit.       People often said: There is no royal to learning. Now I feel it is true. The study now is far more different than before. I often find there are something difficult to understand at once. At this time, you must spend a lot of time studying by yourself or you won't make progress…….
