STATUS OF WOMEN IN ISLAM

Women have a very important place in Islamic society. Unlike a number of other religions, Islam holds women in high esteem. Her importance as a mother and a wife has been clearly stated by Islam.

The Prophet Muhammad said, "Paradise lies at the feet of your mothers." Once a person asked the Prophet, "Who deserves the best care from me?" The Prophet replied, "Your mother (he repeated this three times), then your father and then your nearest relatives."

And In his farewell speech he said: "O people, your wives have certain rights over you and you have certain rights over them. Treat them well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers."

The Prophet also said, "The best among you is the one who is the best towards his wife."These sayings clearly prove the important position given to women in Islam but there are still people, who have misgivings about the status of women in Islam.

To these people, the Muslim women is seen as 'A prisoner in the four walls of the house', a non-person', and 'someone who has no rights and is living always under the domination of a man '. These notions are totally wrong and are based on ignorance rather than knowledge of Islam.

In order to Judge these false ideas held by this people, it would be useful to survey the attitudes to women in different societies in the past.In the past in some societies a woman was regarded as a slave. Or considered her a commodity to be bought and sold.

Some societies regarded women as temptresses, responsible for the fall of Adam.

Some societies considered their women worse then death, pests, serpents or even Hell. A wife's life ended with the death of her husband. a widow had to jump into the flames of her husband's funeral pyre.
Some societies considered a woman is a cause for grief and unhappiness and baby girls were sometimes buried alive after birth.
In 587 CE, a meeting was held to study the status of women and to determine whether a woman could truly be considered a human being or not!
Some societies before 1850, were not counted women as citizens and women had no personal rights until 1882'.
Some societies treated women as second-class citizens.
In some country Male and female students were not given the same rights until 1964.

If we keep this picture in mind and look into the position of the women in Islam, we must conclude that Islam liberated women from the Dark Age of obscurity fourteen hundred years ago!Islam is a religion of common sense and is in line with human nature.

It recognises the realities of life. This does not mean it has recognized equality of man and woman in every respect. Rather, it has defined their duties in keeping with their different biological make-up.

God has not made man and woman identical, so it would be against nature to try to have total equality between a man and a woman. That would destroy the social balance.

Society would not prosper but would instead have insoluble problems such as broken marriages, illegitimate children and the break-up of family life.

These problems are already rife in some society. Schoolgirl pregnancies, an increase in abortions, divorce and many other problems have cropped up because of a permissive outlook and the so-called freedom of women.

This is 2007! Who are you to question God and decide that men and women should not be equal? You mention pregnancies and divorce and abortions as if women get pregnant on their own and marry each other and have babies all by themselves. Your holy posture is extremely chauvinistic and makes your religion look ridiculous, which it isn't. Those who interpret Islam for their own purposes destroy what is an excellent and fulfilling religion. Men and women are equal, perhaps women more equal than men. More than half the people born are women, and everyone is a woman at the moment of conception. Hormones take care of the rest. Once people stop interpreting religion for the rest of us, and let us live our lives as we choose and make women equal with men, the world will be a much better place.

This is an extremely interesting article but I also have a question.

If a Muslim female-doctor, after several years of hard medical studies, want to treat people will she allow to treat  women as well as men?

Why can't a relationship between a Muslim woman and a non-Muslim man exist? I am a non-Muslimm and I have just split up from a relationship with a Muslim woman, because of the future. Both of us could see us being together for a long time, and we were falling in love with each other. However, the relationship had to end, due to the fact that a non-Muslim man cannot mary a Muslim woman. I would have to convert, and I can never see myself doing that, which effectively ended the relationship. Is there no way around this rule without me converting to Islam, or her renouncing her faith? Meaning no disrespect to Islam, don't you think this rule is absurd, especially when a Muslim man can marry a non-Muslim woman?
