China

June 9, 2008

Every May 5th in lunar calendar is Dragon Boat Festival, it is a Chinese traditional festival, it has more than 2000 years' history nowadays. So if you are foreigners, you should wanna know what is it? Is it special? How to celebrate it?
Yes, your question is mine. One of the explanation is that the Dragon Boat Festival monumentalizes Qu Yuan, a Chinese poet, most greatest poet in China, not only in ancient but also in present. 2000 years ago, Qu Yuan was so sad about his country which was defeated by Qin period, and then he jumped into Minluo River on May 5th in lunar calendar. And then the Dragon Boat Festival came out.
From last year, the Chinese Government made it into public holiday, so that people can celebrate this day when they are free, and the Chinese traditional culture can go on generation by generation. When the Dragon Boat Festival comes, we eat rice dumplings and eggs, we hold dragon boat match, wear 5 colors' thread and other Chinese traditional accouterments.
Yesterday, I went up at 5:00 am, then went to riverside of Songhuajiang. So many crowds were there, most of them came to riverside in last evening, some of them took their tents , waited until dawn, when the sun raised, people used water in the river to clean their eyes and foreheads, they hoped to have good lucks and avoid all diseases. My mother and I walked along riverbank, bought some paper cucurbit, watched dragon boats. It was excited. When I came back home, it was already 9:00 am, I ate some eggs and rice dumplings. It is delicious!
Rice dumpling is the most popular food on that day, there are many flavours in it. For instance, Chinese date, red bean, pork etc. What is your favourite flavour? Rice dumpling can make by yourself or buy in supermarket or shopping mall which is deepfreezed.
Oh, I forgot one part of my words, I said that people wore 5 colors' thread on that day, but when we put it off? After the first rain after that day. Keep on focusing on it! You'll love it!
