Today, in Interpreting and Translating  class,  professor Ruan said, Chinese poems are untranslatable. But why? I was puzzled. Whether it is too difficult to be translated in English or there is something  in it truly untranslatable?

I tried to translate one, although I don't know if it could 100%  express the whole meaning well of the original poem.

Target Text:

                                         Dawning of spring

I slumbered and woke up at the drowsy dawn of spring, not knowing morning was coming until the chirping of singing birds is heard there and here. After whole night of strong wind and showers, I suddenly figure out the birds were crying for all the dropped flowers on the ground.

Autumn is bewitching. It is a bright harvest season in my mind. Many white clouds in the blue sky look like sail boats. Wind is like a naughty boy. It goes across the tree. It makes all the leaves shaking and quivering and quaking. It is also like a raider because it robs trees of their gold and laughs when it's conquered and won. You describe many words you've found as hard to translate, but then you do translate them all into English

Source Text:                        春晓

                                   春 眠 不 觉 晓,

                                   处 处 闻 啼 鸟。

                                   夜 来 风 雨 声,

                                   花 落 知 多 少。

I have no idea how do you understand this poem through my translation? What could you image or think about? If  you can, give me some feedback and share your thinking with me, OK? Thank you~

yeah....as a matter of fact, I felt I was making a description rather than translating a poem. It seems not easy to be a good translator, especially those who translate poems. Not only they should have good knowledges about its language and culture, but they also should the beauty of  words they used as well as the rhyme of the source text.I think that is a kind of recreation in another language. :)

Good poetry you share here.
I think your teacher meant something else.. In fact, you can translate (explain) that poetry but it'll never sound like the original one.
Take the Arabic poetry as an example. In Arabic we have some rules for writing poems, one of these rules something we call it Poems Weights. I don't know how to describe it for you, but what I want to tell from that, that I can translate Arabic poem to English, but i'll lose the Weight, as a result it'll lose its beauty.
I mean I can translate it as a prose not as a poem. Because I can't use the rules of english poetry with the translation.

I hope you get it XD

Sorry for talking too much.

After having seven hours’ good time for Karaoke at BBfly of coastal city, I came back to dormitory at approximately 8 o’clock. It was rainy and dark, but somehow, I like this kind of weather so much. Rain fell on the trees and dripped steadily from the leaves. Rain spattered against my light purple umbrella, playing a happy rhythm. When I was out of my dormitory and was to open the door with my key, I suddenly stopped because heard a hard broken-hearted crying inside. At the same time, I recognize it was my roommate’s voice, Fang. Actually, at the beginning I had no idea what happened and what should I do then. After 3 minutes thought, I got up the courage to knock the door 4 times to tell her someone is to coming in, then I opened the door and moved indoors quietly so as not to interrupt and offend her. In sorrow she sank to the ground and closed her eyes with her mobile phone in hand, sobbing and then crying hard again. I don’t know what should I say, but I felt it necessary to comfort her right now. So I asked cautiously, heading her off,” Are you all right?”  Lifting her head and looking up slowly, she shouted at me and her soft gentle voice became fiercely “Let me alone. It’s none of your business.” Tears ran down her cheeks and her eyes were red from crying. So I keep silent. What ails her! But how can I take no notice of my roommate? I put a DOVE chocolate on her table because my mum told me that eating chocolate can make us happy. It was a little serve I threw in. I hope she would be better soon although I still didn’t know what happened to her. This will be a night I cannot forget. The first time I saw Fang grunted with desolation, throwing herself down in an agony of pain and sorrow. Great sobs racked her body. My dear Fang, what made you sound so down-hearted?

So where are you now? When I was in primary school, I had a dream that one day I could visit  Antarctica, row to the south pole and take an emperor penguin into my boat and then come back home. (`v`)

Yeah,I agreed with you. As a Chinese proverb said,"It's better for the doer to undo what he has done" or "Whoever started the trouble should end it.
" And what should an outsider do could be better than accompanying with her silently? Are you really living in Antarctica?I know many country which are located on all the continents except Antarctica.\(^=^)/

I agree with Mr. Snoopyboy in every word.
You did what you have to do, and now it's the time to wait and giving her the time she needs to recover.

Congratulations to her, I say. Because she has a friend like you beside her.
I hope she gets over it as soon as possible.

Finally, I want to tell you that you have a great ability in writing stories and events. You really have a good way which making me feel the story as if it was happening in front of me.

Don't try and be too invasive, giev Fang her space and the time needed for her to come to her senses. You are obviously very concerned about her and placing a chocolate treat on her table is simply a graceful gesture.

I hope Fang gets better and gets over whatever she's going through. nice narration of the event and what a good friend are you being to her right now !!

My name is Wolf for I have a talented owner who is always on the prowl for new and unusual names for her pets. Im a good doggy at home. And you might think I lead a happy life every day, right? Wrong! I am going to tell you why.

First of all, I am bored, bored, and bored. Have you ever thought what may a dog do all day? The answer is nothing. Nothing at all! My owner is busy in her studying all the time. You know, she has to be away from home all day, going to school and doing her part-time jobs. After returning home, she still needs to finish her homework and then she immerses in her digital world, accustomed to instant messaging, surfing the internet, listening to music and watching television simultaneously, even never once turning her head and glancing at her little poor doggy. So what am I supposed to do? Sure. I can watch the house or apartment. It’s as easy as watching the paint dries or the grass grows. But that’s so boring, isnt it. So every time when my owner come back, I get so excited, barking, jumping and running around as if I am very happy. But she will never know it is because I was so bored all day. If I am lucky, she would take me for a walk after supper.
The second thing I have to mention is the food. I eat the same food, meal after meal, day after day, week after week and month after month. SOS! Who can hear my
screaming and yelling in mind, "Help, help me!" My dear owner, would you like to eat the same thing day by day? Of course not. So why do you think your little darling
doggy will like it? I don't want to eat dogfood anymore. I hate it.
Another thing - television. I wonder why my owner could watch
such stupid programs, hour after hour and night after night. Are there any programs for dogs on television? No, not a single one. So what can I do? What else can I do but napping? So I sleep. I’m not lazy. I am bored.
