‘Reutlinger Nachrichten’ says that even now – more than one year after the beginning of the Tigray-Conflict (Tigray being the region a militant group originated from as well as the region of which you could say that here they started this all) it still happens that one party or the other commits a deadly strike – like the air raids on a refugee camp in January – that can be considered as a violation of human rights or even a war crime. However there seems to be also some progress like TPLF ordering its militia to retreat and go back to Tigray or offering negotiation for a ceasefire. Also the government of Ethiopia doesn’t seem to be so keen on any further military conflicts. Yet Iran and Turkey keep sending their supplies of weapons and many citizens of Ethiopia criiticize the government for negotiating with TPLF. Also they say that the TPLF has committed too many war crimes – sexual assault, murder, execution of civil people, execution of people just because they belonged to a certain religious group, deplacing people, robbery – to make peace possible too soon.

The Catholic aid-organisation ‘missio’ says: People in Tigray in Northern Ethiopia have been suffering from a brutal civil war since November 2020. The conflict between the Ethiopian army and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) sparked a mass exodus. More than 60,000 people have fled to neighboring Sudan. Refugees from the region report atrocities committed by militias as well rape and executions. Satellite images show extreme destruction. Many families are torn apart. Almost everyone has lost someone close.
A delegation from the Catholic church was able to get an idea of the situation in Tigray in mid-January. They returned from their visit, talking about massive damage and looting in the diocese of Adigrat. Above all, the people lacked food and medicine, hence why they’re stealing. Help is urgently needed in order to be able to provide emergency aid and to initiate peacekeeping measures.

While these days everyone talks about ‘Corona’ the newspaper ‘Katholisches Sonntagsblatt’ also wrote one article about the disease ‘noma’. This infectious disease is often caused by malnutrition or dehydration, smoking, poor oral hygiene, unsafe drinking water, proximity to unkempt livestock, an immunodeficiency disease, including AIDS or measles. It causes ulcers, and rapid, painful tissue degeneration to the point of degrading tissues of the bones in the face. People can’t eat, drink, speak or smile anymore. The mortality rate is high, even though there are also many who survive. Cases have been reported in Africa – especially Nigeria and Ethiopia -, Asia (especially Nepal) and South America.
I know that ‘MSF’ (Doctors Without Borders) helps them and that you may give them financial support by donating to them. By the way the ’s’ in ‘https’ means that this is an officially trustworthy aid organisation. Maybe you should contact them first via the e-mail to explain to them what you want them to use your donation for.

‘Suedwestpresse’ says that Ethiopia just gets tormented by unusually enormous swarms of locusts. Farmers even dropped their traditional methods and meanwhile try to fight these swarms by means of chemicals – however due to the amount of locusts even this is of minimal use only.
