Not really new facts, but facts I didn’t know until recently: ‘Das Gesundheitsmagazin’ now wrote an article about tobacco:
>Since tobacco plants extract a high amount of nutrients from the earth, each tobacco plantation will eventually result in an area becoming wasteland.
>Tobacco plants are rather sensitive and thus require pesticides which in turn pollute the ground.
>Children are forced to work on tobacco plantations in Tanzania – hence why I post this information here – and Malawi for 12 to 13 hours a day. They aren’t even given gloves even though touching tobacco leaves is hazardous to health. And of course if you work on a tobacco plantation you may be given a lot of orders that require touching these leaves.

Ethiopia and Tanzania now made the slaughtering of donkeys illegal or at least minimalized the number of donkeys one may slaughter per year respectively. Now even Kenya illegalized the export of donkeys or donkey-based products. Reason is that in China donkey-skin is used in some kind of pseudo-medicine. Thus in developing countries it happens that people steal donkeys to sell them to customers abroad. This trade with donkeys or at least body-parts of donkeys led to a decline of the donkey-population. At the same time these countries depend on a stable number of donkeys in their agriculture. That’s how these countries justify their new laws.

The German newspaper ‘Suedwestpresse’ says that in Tanzania it is common for children to produce their own soccer balls by using nothing, but a thread, a needle and some old pieces of leather (for example from a damaged bag). Inspired by this recycling-method a primary school in Dettingen (Erms) in Baden-Wuerttemberg/ Germany now offered a very well attended tutorial last week where real Tanzanians taught people how to do this.

Okay! This episode came out like 1,5 weeks ago, so I’m a little late. Still in one of their latest episodes – a special that is – the German TV-show ‘TopZehn’ listed the Kilimanjaro Marathon in Moshi (Tanzania) as one of the 15 most challenging runs in the world. This race is 42,2 km long and takes place every February or March.
