The German newspaper ‘GEA’ says that the ‘Behinderung und Entwicklungszusammenarbeit’ – an institution that supports people with a disability in Germany – now made it possible for a wheelchair bound high school graduate to spend a year as a voluntary worker abroad. The thing is that before that the girl didn’t even think it was possible for her to get any job as a voluntary worker. Even her family, friends and teachers had doubts!

The TV-show ‘NDR Ratgeber’ reported about the case of an infant girl named Juliana who suffered from moja moja, a brain-disease that gets life-threatening if not treated via surgery. The health insurance company however refused to pay surgery in a very good hospital in Switzerland and insisted that this girl be treated in a less qualified German hospital instead. Juliana’s parents protested and made their case public. Even jurists gave public interviews in which they analyzed this case from a juristic point of view. At last the insurance company gave in to public pressure and this child finally was flown to Switzerland to have her surgery.

Today in church I learned that the story of Sierra Leonie actually might be very encouraging to who want to improve the situation of people in developing countries: At the end of the civil war in 2002 people had little hope that this country would ever have an intact infrastructure or even just a low crime rate. With ebola becoming an issue in 2014 the problems of Sierra Leonie even seemed to be getting worse.
Now in the second half of 2018 however:
>all militia are disarmed,
>the infrastructure is getting better and better,
>the number of crimes has decreased rapidly,
>soldiers and police officers don’t commit crimes against ordinary citizens anymore and if they do, they get punished,
>there’s a sufficient number of pharmacies and hospitals,
>public schools offer regular classes,
>people who got traumatized during the war (especially former child-soldiers) receive a trauma-therapy.
