what does this mean ?

I’ve got a question here.
What does “I have a lot at stake” mean ? My friend told me it means “I have a lot riding on this”. But I still don’t quite understand what they both exactly mean ?

By the way, I like this website so much . Thank you guys for putting so much effort for us, non-native speakers. I love you guys ~

I have a lot at stake :  I have a lot to lose.

Examples: 

I am starting a new business.  i have invested a lot of time and money in it. I have a lot at stake if my plan doesn't work.

The team has to win this game.  There is a lot at stake; if they lose the game, they will not go to the finals.

To have a lot riding on something : Something is very important and has cost me a lot of money or work.  I have a lot to lose if it doesn't work.

We have a lot riding on this presentation. If we don't do a good job we will lose our client.

I hope my team wins the game.  I bet a lot of money and I have a lot riding on this game. (or I have a lot at stake on this game.)
