Here is a sentence: When she didn't want to see him yesterday, he blew it out of proportion and became angry.

blew it out of proportion? what does "it" refer to?

In this situation I think 'it' refers to the situation between the boy and girl, the issue of her not wanting to see him.  Maybe she was busy but maybe he thought she was seeing some other guy, or something…  He blew it out of proportion.
