Large is a better word to use in written documents. Big is almost a childish word, large is a more adult word. They mean the same thing. Large gives a better impression of your English skills than big does. I hope that makes sense.

I agree with mapleleafman, big is often used as more of a slang word, for example-

- " Oh, I tell you, this chick was big ! "
