There is no real difference in meaning between near and close to.

Note that it is close to not just close

Examples:

The spider sat near Miss Muffet.    The spider sat close to Miss Muffet.

I live near the bus station.    I live close to the bus station.

Each sentence in the pair has the same meaning.

When we are talking about emotional closeness, we always use close to; never near.

I feel close to my brothers. not  I feel near my brothers.

We are a close and loving family.  not   We are a near and loving family.

NEAR is a bit more formal, so if you are writing something in a more formal context, choose NEAR over CLOSE

Keep in mind that there are certain set expressions where one is used all the time.

The two planes almost crashed. It was a near miss.   (never a close miss)

That movie was nowhere near as bad as the one we saw last week.  (never nowhere close as bad)

Really very nice a knowledge. I didnt hear that a difference between near and close to. In fact never hear knowledge about near and close to. What a pity me!

Thanks ashq and gkisseberth.

I don't usually use near for non-physical descriptions.

Example.

How old do you think I am?

25

Close (wouldn't use near)

That's sounds right. You could use "nearly" though.

I'm nearly 50 years old.

In this case, "nearly" means close, but not quite.
