Ever since it started more than two decades ago, hip hop has been young people’s music. But no one puts that in perspective more than Lil Wayne, who began rapping at age 11 and became famous by the time he was 15 for rapping in a relaxed style that’s influenced by rock and R&B.

But unlike many child stars whose talents disappear in adulthood, Lil Wayne continues to release popular albums that get good reviews. His latest. Tha Carter III, is the best-selling CD in years. Devan noticed the album recently, and she’s about to get educated on Lil Wayne by Beren.

Devan:  I was at the store the other day and they had the hot new albums up and number one was Lil Wayne. Who is this Lil Wayne?

Beren:  I love Lil Wayne. Lil Wayne’s the coolest. I don’t know…I think he joined The Cash Money Millionaires when he was like 11.

Devan:  Wow, 11? So how old is he now?

Beren:  I’m pretty sure he’s like 26. 25 or 26, so he’s still, like, pretty young, but he’s still Lil Wayne because he is lil’. But yeah, no, Carter III, it just came out and it’s been…I think somebody leaked it from the recording studio where he was recording it at, so he kept on doing different mixes and remixing stuff and putting out different mix tapes, and it finally came out and it’s actually really awesome, but the song everyone knows is “Lollipop.”

Devan:  So what makes him so unique? What’s so special about his sound?

Beren:  I think it’s his voice and he has a really laid-back delivery and also he’s just out there, kind of like Del tha Funkee Homosapien, except more druggy.

Devan:  So do you own this new, hot album?

Beren:  I only have the single.

Devan:  Are you gonna buy it?

Beren:  Yeah, definitely.

Discussion

Devan noticed that Lil Wayne’s album was the most popular at the record store, but she’s not familiar with him. Beren explains how Lil Wayne started out very young and joined The Cash Money Millionaires, a label for extremely successful and rich rappers. Even though he’s 25 years old now, he’s still lil’ or little. In fact, he’s only 5’6” or about 167 cm tall.

But Lil Wayne’s latest album wasn’t leaked by anyone at his studio. The rapper decided to leak it himself to help promote the official release. It seems like it worked…Beren plans to buy it even though she already owns a recording of its most popular song.

Do you think it’s a good idea for artists to leak their albums before they’re released? Lil Wayne was already rapping when he was 11. What were you up to?

its a good idea to leak some songs before they come out so we just get more excited to see the whole album. by the time i was 11 years old i just wanted to play with my friends outside, playing dolls i didnt do anything big this age.

Wayne is in the hiphop game for so long time.

That's awesome 'cause the sound of hiphop is changing so fast.

But I don't really understand how good he is, actually.

I definitely prefer Outkast, Missy Elliot, The Roots, Common, Gangstarr etc…

I'm not really into Lil Wayne's music because his songs are nasty to me. Lolly Pop is actually a nasty song. The MTV is nasty and I hate the lyrics. His songs does not show respect to woman and it will give a bad impression to the young ones;Treating women with no respect.
