Quote

1. Quote - Listen to the quote and guess what the slang means.

“If I did not have my education, I would be in a bad situation. I would probably be a bad money manager and I would be heading for a dead end.”

-Tennis star Serena Williams on why education is important to her. (bet.com)

Definition

1. Definition - Study the definition.

hopeless situation; stuck position

2. Use - Learn how the slang is used.

Tennis player Serena Williams has made over $20 million and won 10 grand slam tournaments as a pro tennis player. She is one of the highest-ranked female tennis players out there. And she hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down recently. Her life is the opposite of a dead end.

But Serena says that she could be heading for a dead end if she hadn’t gotten a good education. She wouldn’t know how to take care of her money, so she would probably make bad decisions. She might even end up broke, in spite of the millions she’s made playing tennis. If that happened, she would be stuck in a very bad position.

The term dead end is often used to describe a street that doesn’t go through or has no exit. When you get to the end of a dead end road, you can’t go any farther. You’re stuck. So the expression dead end can also be used to describe life situations that feel hopeless. A dead end job, for instance, is a job that offers no opportunity to move up to a better position or higher salary.

Serena Williams doesn’t have to worry about ending up in a dead end job. In fact, she probably wouldn’t have to work another day in her life if she didn’t want to. Too bad the rest of us can’t all be so lucky.

Examples

1. Examples - Hear some example sentences.

“Their relationship stopped moving forward. It turned into a dead end.”

“He is depressed at work because he has a dead end job.”

“Sometimes my life feels like a dead end, and I worry that nothing will ever change.”
