Internet Service

Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

Using the internet from home is very common. But you first must order the service.
There should be a few service providers in your area, if you live in the U.S. Just give one of them a call.
Beth recently made a similar call to set up her service. Listen below and learn how she did it!

Rep:   Thank you for calling Qwest DSL. My name is Donnie. Your name, please?

Beth:   Beth.

Rep:   How can I help you out today?

Beth:   I’m interested in learning about your DSL service.

Rep:   Let me run a test on your phone line to see what’s available for you.

Beth:   Okay. Great.

Rep:   How many telephone numbers do you have with us?

Beth:   Oh, one.

Rep:   Okay. And what the DSL would do is just come in over the same telephone number and allow you to be on the phone and the internet at the same time over that one telephone line.

Beth:   Okay. And how fast is that connection?

Rep:   That’d be a 256k connection.

Beth:   Okay. And is that guaranteed 24/7?

Rep:   It would be a guaranteed connection, yes.

Beth:   What about, um, one other question.

Rep:   Sure.

Beth:   Um, what’s the ISP situation? Do you get that as part of the service?

Rep:   You would have to select an internet service provider to use in conjunction with the DSL.

Beth:   And what about email accounts?

Rep:   That’s through your internet service provider.

Beth:   And is that free, or is that an extra charge?

Rep:   The ISP’s tend to range from, say, eighteen to twenty-two dollars. So all in all you’re looking at about forty bucks a month, give or take.

Beth:   And are you having any promotions?

Rep:   Right now the activation for the service is free and the hardware is five dollars a month.

Beth:   And what is that? Is that like a modem?

Rep:   Yep.

Beth:   Okay, great. Well, thank you for your help.

Rep:   You’re welcome. Thank you for calling Qwest. Have a good day.

Discussion

As you can see, it only takes a few minutes to get the information you need to make a decision. Beth asked many good questions about options.
The rep was very nice and helpful. Most customer service reps like this are. Just remember some of the key questions that Beth asked and you’ll have an internet connection in no time!
I hope today’s lesson was helpful! Good luck trying it out!
Your American Friend,
John

The way is quite similar to here in China. But after the telephone communication, DSL company's staff will come to install line connection(like the medem) to make sure it is done.
