(It is a brief of all previous lessons)

EXPLAINATION:

I believe that this study is a useful lesson for advanced level.

Common mistakes can be based on misused forms. Misused Forms are usually concerned with using a wrong preposition because “using prepositions” is a difficult topic. This lesson main purpose is to help to correct the common mistakes about using prepositions.

CHAPTER ONE

The First Eleven

  “A and B” 

 Let’s start

1.absorbed (=with sb’s attention completely held) in, not at 

(False) - She was absorbed at her work. 

(True) – She was absorbed in her work. 

2.accuse of, not for 

(False) - He was accused for murder. 

(True) – He was accused of murder. 

(False) - He accused her for cheating. 

(True) – He accused her of cheating. 

3.afraid of, not from 

(False) -He is not afraid from spiders.  

(True) - He is not afraid of spiders. 

4.aim at, not on 

(False) She aimed on the horse.

(True) She aimed at the horse. 

5.angry with (a person), not against (a person) 

(False) – Police was angry against  him.

(True) – Police was angry with him. 

  angry at (a thing), not with or against (a thing) 

(False) - she was angry with the weather. 

(True) – She was angry at the weather. 

6.annoyed with (a person), not against (a person)   

(False) – She is annoyed against herself  for failing the exam.  

(True) –  She is annoyed with herself  for failing the exam.        

7.anxious (=worried and nervous) about, not for 

(False) – We are anxious for  his sanity 

(True) –  We are anxious about his sanity     

  anxious (=eager to do sth) for, not about 

(False) – We are anxious about  our friends’ success

8.arrive at, not to 

(False) – we arrived to the village last night

  arrive in (for countries or large cities), not to or at  

(False) – Mr. John has arrived to Madrid (Tokyo, Rome, Ukraine, Turkey, Ankara, etc)

9.ashamed of, not from  

(False) – Mr. Smith was ashamed from his mistake. I am ashamed from my teacher. 

(True) –  Mr. Smith was ashamed of his mistake. – I am ashamed of my teacher. 

10.believe in, not to  

(False) – Muslims believe to the Prophet Muhammad. - Christians believe to Jesus Christ.

(True) – Muslims believe in the Prophet Muhammad. - Christians believe in Jesus Christ 

NOTE: “To believe in” means to have faith in                   

          “To believe (without in)" means to regard as true, “I believe what she says”   

11.boast of (or about), not for  

(False) – he boasted  for  his car.

(True) –  he boasted about (or of) his car  

CHAPTER TWO

The second eleven prepositions  “C ” 

Let’s go on correcting our mistakes…

1.careful of, not for 

(False) – She is very careful for her health.

(True) – She is very careful of her health. 

2.come by train, air,boat,bus,etc.,  not with train,etc. 

(False) - He is going to come with train tomorrow.

(True) – He is going to  come by train tomorrow. 

(False) - He came with bus yesterday.

(True) – He came by bus yesterday. 

3.complain of, not for or to 

(False) -He complains for heat.

(True) - He complains of heat. 

4.comply (with sth), (not for or to sth) 

(False) –We will comply for request.

(True) – We will comply with request. 

5.composed of, not from 

(False) The committee is composed from doctors.

(True)The committee is composed of doctors. 

6.confidence in, not to or with 

(False) – She has great confidence to  him.

(True) – She has great confidence in him. 

7.conform to, not with   

(False) – We must conform with the rules.  

(True) –  We must conform to the rules.     

8.congratulate on, not for 

(False) – We congratulate you for your success.

(True) –  We congratulate you on your success. 

9.consist of, not from  

(False) – A year consists from twelve months.

(True) – A year  consists of twelve months. 

NOTE :Great Care must be taken never to use “consist” in the passive voice. 

10.covered with, not by  

(False) – Mountains are covered by snow.

(True) –  Mountains are covered with snow.  

11.cure of, not from 

(False) – Helen was cured  from  her illness.

(True) –  Helen was cured of her ilness. 

NOTE: the noun “cure” takes “for”.

-      There is no cure for that disease.  

CHAPTER THREE

The third part  “D ”

Let’s go on correcting our mistakes…

 1.depend on or upon,   not from 

(False) – It  depends  from  herself.

 (True) – It  depends on (or upon) herself.  

2.deprive of,   not from  

(False) - She was deprived from her freedom.

 (True) – She was deprived of her freedom.  

3.die of an illness,  not from an illness 

(False) – A lot of people died from malaria.

 (True) – A lot of people died of malaria.  

4.different  from,  not than 

(False) –My sunglasses is different than yours.

 (True) – My sunglasses is different from yours.  

5.disappointed in , not from 

(False) –I was disappointed  from her work.

 (True) – I was disappointed in  her work. 

NOTE: We are disappointed in a thing when we see that it isn’t what we expected or desired, however, we are disappointed of a thing when we fail to get it; as,   We were disappointed of our hopes”    

6. divide into parts, not in parts   

(False) – She divided the cake in  four parts.

 (True) – She divided  the cake into four parts. 

NOTE: But a thing may be divided “in half” or “in

two”; as, “ He divided the apple in half (or in two).”  

7. doubt(n) of or about,  not for   

(False) – We have no doubt in  his ability.

 (True) – We have no doubt of  (or about ) his ability.  

8.dressed in,   not with 

(False) – The woman was dressed with black.

 (True) –  The woman was dressed in black. (Or the woman was in black)  

 

CHAPTER FOUR

 The Fourth Part “E-F-G”  

 Let’s go on correcting our mistakes

1.exception to,    not of 

(False) – This is an exception of the rule 

(True) – This is an exception to  the rule. 

NOTE: however, we can say “with the exception of ”;  as, I like all kinds of films with the exception of (= but not) horror films.  

2.exchange for,    not by or with

(False) - She exchanged wheat by  machinery. 

(True) – She exchanged  wheat for machinery.   

3.fail in,   not from

(False) –A lot of student failed from English last year.

(True) – A lot of student failed in English last year.   

4.full of,   not with 

(False) – The jar was full with oil.

(True) – The jar was  full of oil.  

5.get rid of,  not from 

(False) –I should get rid from her. 

(True) – I should get rid of  her.  

6. glad of or about, not from or  with 

(False) – I am glad from (or with)  the news. 

(True) – I am glad of (or about) the news.  

NOTE: But a person “glad at”; a result as, He is glad at having received a good mark.”  

7. good at,   not for or in   

(False) – I am good in speaking Ukranian. 

(True) – I am good at speaking Arabic and Portuguese.  

NOTE: “He is good in class” means that his conduct is good.  

8.guard against,   not from 

(False) – You must guard from bad habits.  

(True) –  You must guard against bad habits.  

9.guilty of,  not for 

(False) – He was found guilty for murder.

(True) –  He was found guilty of murder.
