OOOOOOOOOO good question!

Uh…the funnny thing is that I don't consider "do" or "make" to be similar, it's funny, but they just don't seem related in my mind (because of usage), but grammatically they do mean the same thing – to make or do an action that produces a result.

I think here is the difference:

To make something is to produce a tangible result.

To do something is usually to perform an action whose results are not tangible.

But take a look at this:

Mother: Who made this mess in the kitchen?

Son: I did.

So…it is confusing. But my instinctual response is that to make produces something out of nothing. In other words, "to make" is a special kind of "to do" (like "to do" is the genus and "to make" is the species)

That is why the son can answer "I did."

I think I meant semantically not grammatically, er….

Another example:

I made the homework (I the teacher made an assignment, wrote out the questions, photocopied them and distributed them to the students).

I did the homework (I answered the questions that the teacher made)

I never heard or saw the spelling way of”干作业“ in Chinese。We usually say”做作业 “ to say” doing the homework“。If there is not enough time to finish the homework and the student has to try to finish the homework,we usually say ‘’赶作业“。

Thanks Aljensen, I totally understand what you explain for the two words, it's unavoidable for me to use them incorrectly in future though.

Could you tell me when speaking English could become an instinctual response to me?Sealed

English is a mixed language, so it doesn't really function logically, at least not in terms of grammatical function. A lot of it is intuitive, because it depends on the meaning of the words rather than any set rule. A lot of English grammar rules (especially for advanced students) revolve around stylistic choices, rather than purely grammatical ones.

Maybe all languages are a bit like this, though?
