Sonia Gandhi, A catholic and leader of the majoriy party, rejects the Prime minister’s Post and nominates Manmohan Singh a Sikh , Who toke oath under Abdul Kalam a muslim, All this happens in a counrty with over 80% hindus.

This is the speech given by swami Vivekanada in Chicago in 1893-

“I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to Southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the nation which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings: “As the different streams having their sources in different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee.”

Admit that it is a high speed devvelopment country.

Javamanju, what do you think of people calling India "Hindustan?"  Is this associated with right-wing Hindu movements in India?  Or is it just something I saw Shah Rukh Khan singing about one time? ^^

No, Hindustan is name given to "Bhratha Rashtra" by Muslims, so I don’t think right-wing Hindus would ever want India to  be called "Hindustan". Right wing people would rather call India "India" than Hindustan. But original name of India is "Bharath" or "Bharatha rashtra" , which we call in local tounge.

you must have heard that "dil hai hindustani" staring "king khan" . Do you watch Indian movies? If so I would suggest you to watch "mumbai meri jan". It is based on 7/11 mumbai train blast but it has a superb human story.

Also, is there a controversy in the renaming of cities from their colonial names to perhaps more "authentic" names, like Bombay to Mumbai and Calcutta to Kolkota(sp?)?  I heard that in the case of Mumbai, many of the inhabitants there are unhappy with the name and prefer to call it Bombay still.


Each city has different issues, Banglore and Mumbai has similar issues.(explained below). Chennai and Kolkota  have different issues, People there are like the French. An outsider will suffer if he goes to Chennai or kolkota because people there never speak Hindi or English. Majority of people in Chennai and kolkota are happy with the name change

Take for example my city. Bangalore, nice "western" sounding name given by the British. But the polotician have changed the name to "Bengalooru" (originally the name came from "benda kalooru" which means baked beans village). Localities which have been reduced to only 30% of the population love this, some have mixed feelings, Corporates ,"elitists" and "Page 3"people(socialites) don't like this.

Politicians call it going to the roots. I feel very strange when people want to change the name of cities . Hardly any one complains about "aurangabad" which is named after a tyrant auragzeb, but people complain about "bombay" or "Madras".

Aurangabad has 80% Hindus and Rampur has 70% Muslims, No one in India is a Majority. thats why we call it "Unity in diversity". Islamic terrorism, Hindu extremism, Christian forced Conversion, Regional and religious divide is on a raise. But the divide is not as great as media portrays it.

The long history of religious and cultural diversity is interesting.  I think it´s very cool that your country seems to have taken the best from all of these influences, and even from British rule.

Every one is welcome to India.Yes Weather is a bit annoying for some people, But people can adapt to a weather easily

British rule was a important phase in Indian history and so were other rule. I can write a long essay on how british and Islamic rule was good and bad.

People just don't care weather a person is a beliver in 1000 gods or one god or no god. I was a disbeliever, and I never faced any problem. India is the only place where Communists get elected democratically. and communists and not the kind of people who go to temple or a church.

Well no, This film is a human story, A story of how people's lives change after Mumbai train blasts. The story is based on a , media journalist, a hindu extreamist, a working proffesional, and a daily wager.

I will also recommend you to watch "swadesh" which is a beautifully made movie. It is about a Indian engineer who works in NASA, comes to his home village for a vacation, and rediscovers his indian roots. It shows the "other" India.

In your opinion, what does it mean to be Indian?

Well it is difficult to discribe an "Indian". Being Indian is all about openess to heart and  mind, It is about tolerence too. Where else can you find people of all faith, religion, and color, by and large peacefully live together ,That is only in India. Hindus, Jews, Bhuddists,jains and Zorastrians have been calling this home for more than 2000 years. One of the first people to convert to christians and Islam were Indians. This Shows how open an Indian socity was. Even today It is the same  (but there are some fringe elemnts who opose all this)
For an Indian Family is every thing, Family is central to his life. parents live and work for their children, which is the center of thier lives.

 I like Indian movies. And also Indian ppl.

How do Indians see the descendants of Indians who left in the diaspora?  Like those in British Guyana, or South Africa, or Europe or Fiji, or the US?  Not just those born in India who left, but those whose grandparents or great grandparent left India? 

They are still considered a Indian by many. Some consider them as just hindus.

Imagine this, sunita Williams(NASA astronaut) who's father is an Indian is called an Indian by the media. 

In the US some have become ABCD's(American Born Confused desi's). Some are confused about weather they are Indians or Americans/others.  These people are in minority though. My Nephew is an American (3 year old) , (My cous and her husbands have pledged to remain as Indians!! strange!!) She has been thought her "mother tongue",and she is learning english now.

Many developing countries have a conflict between asserting their own traditional values and adopting "modern" "western" values.  How is India handling this?  I notice that often times western or foriegn things are shown as, well, not bad, really, but more like, "not for us"  (Even in that silly movie Parineeta ^^ ) 

Yes there is resistance  to some ideas of west. like sex, alcohol. Alcohol is a big no for middle class families. If a perspective bride's family comes to know that the boy drinks socially then they are certain to call of the wedding. Sex before marraige is a still a taboo. 

Also Marraige, Arranged marraige is still followed than , love marraige, this is slightly changing!!

Live in relation, homo sexuals is looked down upon. No owner will give out thier house for rent to "such" people.

You can term me as a conservative modernist, I don't have issues with love marriage(I may not do that though, I am not too good with women) I don;t approve live in relation. I have moderate views on "homosexuals" and sex before marriage.

India is vast, every new ideas are taken, the above ideas are taken as well. There are many Indians who live like an  american.  But still that family values are still there. "childeren" , parents, aunts , uncles play important part in an indian's life.

some Indian  gods have huge mustache so this could be a reason. The other more logical reason is, mustache means manliness!! 

I used to have thick mustache, because it looks manly. But Indian girls have changed, They prefer men with out mustache, so I had to part away with my mustache. 

Why are Indian girls so pretty?  Do they like men with mustaches?

There are pretty girls every where, India may have slightly more pretty girls because of large number of different gene pool. It has been scientifically proved that off springs of people who have married from different gene pools look better(not necessarily intelligent) .
